November 29, 2023

Hoya carnosa, also known as porcelain flower, jade vine, or wax plant, is a climbing vine or leaf of the plant in the Apocynaceae family. It can be harvested all year round and used fresh or dried.

【Processing Method】Take the original medicinal material, remove impurities, wash and soften it, cut it into small pieces, and dry it.

【Appearance of Medicinal Slice】The medicinal slice of Hoya carnosa is a mixture of stems and leaves. Adventitious roots grow on the stem nodes. The leaves are fleshy, with clusters of glandular organs at the top of the petiole. The leaf blade is ovate to ovate-lanceolate, with a blunt apex and a rounded base.

【Processing Effect】Hoya carnosa has a bitter and cold taste and is slightly toxic. It has the functions of clearing heat and phlegm, detoxifying and reducing swelling, and promoting menstruation and lactation. It is used for epidemic encephalitis B, cough due to lung heat, orchitis, otitis media, mastitis, carbuncle, scrofula, joint swelling and pain, insufficient lactation in postpartum women, and blocked milk ducts. For example, when fresh Hoya carnosa leaves are used together with Houttuynia cordata, they can be decocted in water and taken orally to treat measles complicated with pneumonia and bronchitis. Fresh Hoya carnosa leaves can also be mashed and mixed with honey for external application to treat skin rashes (Fujian Chinese Herbal Medicine). Processing removes impurities and makes the medicine pure, facilitating the extraction of medicinal components and the preparation and formulation of the medicine.
