February 14, 2024

Many women worry that dark circles under their eyes make them look older. According to traditional Chinese medicine, dark circles are often caused by kidney deficiency, insufficient vital energy, poor circulation, and lack of nourishment to the eyes. Factors such as staying up late, playing mahjong, excessive TV watching, internet use, and especially chronic insomnia can directly contribute to dark circles. After ruling out other medical conditions with a doctor, you can try the following methods:

One, Eye Massage:

1. Zan Zhu (the shallow depression between the eyebrows): Press the acupoints on both sides with your thumbs and massage in a way that pushes the two acupoints together.

2. Si Zhu Kong (the slightly depressed area at the end of the eyebrows): Use your middle finger or index finger to gently massage and rub inward.

3. Tai Yang (1 centimeter outward from the outer corner of the eye where the eyebrows and the outer eye line connect): Use your middle finger to gently massage and push the acupoint towards the center of the face. You can also apply eye massage cream or eye nourishing cream on the skin around the eyes and use your ring finger to press the acupoints at the end of the eye, behind the eyeball (1/3 of the lower eyelid from the outside), Si Bai (1/3 of the lower eyelid from the inside), Yan Ming (above the inner corner of the eye), Yu Yao (middle of the eyebrow), and Ying Xiang (outside of the nose wing). Press each acupoint for 3-5 seconds and then relax, do this 10 times in a row. Place your middle finger on the upper eyelid and your ring finger on the lower eyelid, gently pull and massage from the inner corner to the outer corner of the eye, do this 10 times in a row. Then use the fingertips of your index finger, middle finger, and ring finger to gently tap around the eyes in 3-5 circles.

Two, Eye Compress:

1. Lotus Root and Water Chestnut Compress: Wash the lotus root and water chestnut, peel the lotus root, then chop the lotus root and water chestnut and put them into a juicer with 2 cups of water. Apply the crushed residue on the eyes for 10 minutes before sleep, and the juice can be consumed.

2. Potato Slice Compress: Peel and wash the potato, then cut it into thick slices. Apply the potato slices on the eyes for about 5 minutes, then rinse the face with water. Use non-sprouted potatoes.

3. Persimmon Paste Compress: Cut open a ripe persimmon, scoop out the flesh, mix it well, and apply it on the eyes for 10 minutes, then wipe it off with a damp towel. Do this once in the morning and once in the evening.

4. Tea Bag Compress: Apply a used tea bag that has been soaked in red tea on the dark circles for about 5 minutes.

Three, Herbal Kidney Tonic:

Traditional Chinese medicine mainly focuses on nourishing the liver and kidneys, resolving depression, and improving vision. For those with deficient kidney yin, you can take Liu Wei Di Huang Wan, Zhi Bai Di Huang Tang, Gou Qi Di Huang Wan, etc. For those with deficient kidney yang, Gui Fu Di Huang Wan and other warming tonics are recommended.

Four, Dietary Therapy:

Foods rich in vitamin A such as sesame, peanuts, soybeans, carrots, chicken liver, and pig liver can help eliminate dark circles. Additionally, you can prepare a Goji Berry tea with Goji berries and red dates.
