Liver Stagnation and Skin Spots: Traditional Chinese Medicine Approach

November 30, 2023

Traditional Chinese medicine believes that skin spots are often caused by liver stagnation and spleen deficiency, as well as insufficient liver and kidney function. The treatment should focus on nourishing the liver and kidneys, and promoting liver and spleen health. The liver is responsible for storing blood and regulating the flow of qi and blood in the body. It prefers smoothness and dislikes stagnation. When the liver fails to regulate or when emotions are suppressed, it can lead to liver qi stagnation. Liver qi stagnation can easily result in poor circulation of qi and blood, affecting the blood circulation on the face and causing dull and pigmented skin. In addition, the meridians in the body connect the internal organs and the surface of the body. Once the meridians are blocked, symptoms such as skin spots may appear.

Differentiation and treatment:

For skin spots caused by liver qi stagnation and blood stasis, Chai Hu Shu Gan San plus Tao Hong Si Wu Tang can be used. The main ingredients include Chai Hu, Chen Pi, Chuan Xiong, Xiang Fu, Zhi Qiao, Shao Yao, and Zhi Gan Cao.

For liver and kidney deficiency of yin type, Liu Wei Di Huang Wan and Er Zhi Wan can be used to nourish the liver and kidneys. For liver and kidney deficiency with excessive fire due to yin deficiency, Zhi Bo Di Huang Wan can be used. For liver and kidney deficiency of yang type, Jin Kui Shen Qi Wan can be used.

Diet: Avoid eating too many cold foods and raw foods. You can eat yam, red dates, red beans, brown sugar, black chicken, sesame, and other foods.

Drink: Infuse white chrysanthemum flowers (which have liver-clearing and whitening effects), rose flowers, and mimosa bark (which can promote liver health and relieve depression) in water and drink.

Mask: Mix powdered white poria cocos, powdered white silkworm, powdered white angelica (which, when combined with powdered white silkworm, can promote blood circulation, remove spots, and whiten the skin), pearl powder, and egg white into a paste. Apply it as a mask to remove spots and whiten the skin.
