Makeup Expiration Dates: Don't Ignore the Shelf Life

October 22, 2023

Almost every girl knows that skincare products have an expiration date: unopened products last for 3 years, while opened products should be used within 1 year. However, the expiration dates of makeup products are often ignored. Some people use them whenever they remember, and it's not uncommon for them to be stored for several years! But how can we be careless about what we apply on our face? Today, let's summarize the general expiration dates of makeup products and check our own makeup bags.

Finish sunscreen, concealer, and foundation within 1 year after opening

Every day, we definitely use basic makeup products like sunscreen, BB cream, CC cream, and concealer. It is recommended to use them up within one year. Otherwise, the products may separate. If the product comes in contact with the skin, it will go bad after one year. Also, do not store these products in high-temperature places as it will shorten their shelf life.

Finish lip gloss and lip stain within 1 year after opening

Today's lip glosses and lip stains not only have high color saturation but also provide good moisturization. They have gradually become the most favored lip makeup products for girls, surpassing lipsticks. However, these products have a thick texture and often contain fragrance ingredients. To avoid the liquid becoming spoiled, it is recommended to use them up within one year after opening.

Finish mascara within 3 months after opening

Mascara helps us create attractive eyes and is an essential part of many girls' makeup routines. However, because it comes into contact with air every time it is used, it is inevitable that bacteria will be introduced. Therefore, mascara has the shortest lifespan among makeup products. Remember to use it up within three months, or your eyes may suffer!

Finish lipstick and lip pencil within 2 years after opening

Compared to lip glosses and lip stains, lipsticks and lip pencils have a longer shelf life because they are solid. However, you need to use a lip brush for application and avoid direct contact between the lipstick and your lips. By doing so, you can safely use lipsticks for two years.

Finish compact powder, eyeshadow, and blush within 3 years after opening

Compared to the aforementioned makeup products, compact powder, eyeshadow, and blush are easier to store due to their dry powder texture. They are less likely to spoil compared to liquid foundation and concealer. However, it is still recommended to use them up within three years for best results.

Replace makeup brushes every 8-10 years and clean them regularly

The most reasonable investment seems to be makeup brushes! Unlike makeup products, brushes are functional tools and not consumables. However, they still need careful maintenance and cleaning. Replace them as needed to prevent any unwanted guests from residing on the brushes and causing skin sensitivity. It's not worth the risk!
