Gegen powder is a popular health food, and there are many types of Gegen powder on the market. However, some unscrupulous merchants use other starch or even talcum powder to pass off as Gegen powder in order to make a profit. So how can Gegen powder be identified as genuine or fake?
Observe the color
Pure and high-quality Gegen powder is usually white in appearance with a crystalline sheen. Gegen powder is best when it is white, followed by a pale yellow color. If it appears gray or black, it indicates that there are more impurities present, which are products that do not meet the production process and safety standards.
Taste the texture
Pure Gegen powder is mostly tasteless or has a slight sweet aftertaste with a ginseng flavor. If it is fake or of poor quality, it will taste sour and have an earthy smell. Such Gegen powder is not suitable for purchase.
Brewing and picking
After brewing authentic Gegen powder, the color should be milky white or a pale yellow paste-like texture. When the water temperature is above 90 degrees, the texture will become white and semi-transparent. When scooped up with a spoon, it should flow down in a thread-like manner. On the other hand, fake Gegen powder brewed will turn white and will not flow in a thread-like manner, indicating the possible addition of other impurities.
How to brew Gegen powder
1. Put about 15 grams of Gegen powder into a bowl.
2. Add a small amount of warm water to dilute it and mix well.
3. Slowly pour in boiling water while stirring until it becomes semi-transparent.
4. It can be consumed directly or flavored with honey, sugar, etc.
What to pay attention to when brewing Gegen powder
Water temperature
When brewing Gegen powder, it needs to be brewed twice. The first time is to pre-dissolve it with warm water, and the water temperature at this time does not have high requirements. It just needs to dissolve the Gegen powder. The second time, boiling water at a temperature above 90 degrees is needed, otherwise the Gegen powder will be difficult to cook.
Water quantity
When pre-dissolving the Gegen powder, not much water is needed. The water should be in equal amount to the Gegen powder (e.g., about 15 grams of Gegen powder with 15 milliliters of water). It should be enough to dissolve and mix the Gegen powder. For the second brewing, more water is needed than the first time. For example, about 15 grams of Gegen powder with about 80-100 milliliters of boiling water can be used. The amount can be adjusted according to personal taste. If too much water is used, the Gegen powder will be watery and not thick.
