Unlocking the Heart's Vitality: The Benefits of Massaging Shenmen Acupoint

November 23, 2023
When a person's qi is insufficient and their heart is not nourished, they may experience restlessness and insomnia. If medication for insomnia doesn't have a noticeable effect, it is recommended to massage the Shenmen point on the Pericardium Meridian. Below, we will introduce the benefits of massaging Shenmen.

The Origin of the Name Shenmen Acupoint

"Shen" refers to the opposite of ghosts and represents qi, while "men" means gate or doorway. This point is named Shenmen because it has a connection to the Pericardium Meridian through the cavities in the ground. The qi and blood substances are transmitted from the Pericardium Meridian, and the nature of this qi is the same as the essence of the Pericardium Meridian. It represents the spirit and vitality of a person.

Location of Shenmen Acupoint

On the side of the wrist closer to the pinky finger, there is a prominent tendon. The depression on the radial side where it intersects with the transverse wrist crease is the location of this acupoint.

Benefits of Massaging Shenmen

Shenmen is the original acupoint of the Pericardium Meridian. It is the gateway for the flow of qi in and out of the heart and the key point for nourishing and moistening the heart. Regular massage of Shenmen can help supplement the heart's qi, calm the mind, and assist in the prevention and treatment of various cardiovascular diseases. Commonly treated conditions include:

1. Insomnia and forgetfulness caused by insufficient nourishment and restlessness of the heart.

2. When experiencing heart palpitations or atrial fibrillation, massaging Shenmen can provide timely relief.

3. Long-term massage of Shenmen can provide good auxiliary treatment for symptoms such as chest pain, palpitations, insomnia, forgetfulness, anxiety, and depression.

Correct Massage Techniques for Shenmen

Pressure Point Technique: Use the thumb of one hand to apply downward pressure on the opposite side's Shenmen acupoint on the forearm. Maintain constant pressure and then rotate and knead the area until a sore or swollen feeling is produced.

Pressing Technique: Use the thumb to press the Shenmen acupoint. Press and release in a rhythmic pattern, repeating several times. This technique is very effective for treating insomnia and can be performed before sleep.

Rubbing Technique: Use the knuckles to rub the acupoint, applying slight pressure. Rub each side for 3-5 minutes.

Complementary Therapy for Shenmen Acupoint

Massaging Shenmen acupoint together with Neiguan and Laogong acupoints can promote the circulation of meridians, activate blood flow, and effectively prevent and treat angina pectoris and myocardial infarction.

Massage Technique: When applying pressure (both acupoints are bilateral, so both hands should apply pressure), use the index finger to support the hand and apply slight downward pressure with the thumb on the acupoint. Maintain constant pressure and then rotate and knead the area until a sore or swollen feeling is produced.

Precautions for Massaging Shenmen Acupoint

When using the fingertip of the thumb to press the Shenmen acupoint, the strength of the massage should not be too strong or cause excessive soreness or swelling. Pay attention to using appropriate pressure and being gentle. Breathe naturally during the massage and relax slowly after pressing and kneading the acupoint.
