The Significance of Massage on the Fengfu Point: Benefits, Location, and Techniques

November 23, 2023

The Governor Vessel is connected to the Fengfu Point at the neck, serving as the gateway for all Yang meridians. When a person feels a cold wind, it starts from the Fengfu Point. There are many areas in the human body that are susceptible to invasion by wind pathogen, hence the naming of Feng (wind) points such as Fengfu, Fengchi, and Fengmen, which are all places where wind pathogens can hide. Among these points, Fengfu is the most significant, so it is frequently used in massage therapy. So, is it good to frequently massage the Fengfu Point?

The origin of the name Fengfu Point

Feng refers to the qi and blood within the acupoint being wind-like; Fu means residence or dwelling. Fengfu is where wind pathogens accumulate. The qi of the Governor Vessel absorbs moisture and transforms it into wind at this acupoint, making it a vital source of wind qi, hence the name.

Where is the Fengfu Point located?

It is located on the midline of the head and neck, 1 inch above the posterior hairline, directly below the prominence of the external occipital protuberance between the sternocleidomastoid muscles. When locating the acupoint, touch the area behind the earlobe, where there is a prominence called the "mastoid process." From the bottom of this bone along the posterior edge, touch the bone above, and there is a shallow depression, which is the location of this acupoint.

Is it good to frequently massage the Fengfu Point?

Frequently massaging the Fengfu Point has its benefits.

By frequently protecting and massaging the Fengfu Point, it can help prevent and treat colds and strokes.

Regardless of wind-cold or wind-heat, Fengfu is the most effective main acupoint. Frequent massage of this acupoint can improve cerebral blood circulation. Therefore, it is commonly used in clinical practice to treat symptoms such as headache, nasal congestion, runny nose, sore throat, as well as chills and fever caused by colds. It is also used to treat symptoms such as aphasia after a stroke, neck pain, epilepsy, deafness, and muteness.

How to massage the Fengfu Point?

1. Cover the ears with both palms and gently tap the Fengfu Point 36 times with the index, middle, and ring fingers of both hands.

2. Use the middle fingers or thumbs of both hands to press the Fengfu Point, pressing it twice a day for 3-5 minutes each time.

3. Press the Fengfu Point with the index and thumb for 30-40 times.

Precautions for massaging the Fengfu Point

1. When massaging the Fengfu Point, pay attention to applying moderate force. Feel a warm flow spreading to the forehead, and a sense of soreness and swelling is preferred, without feeling pain.

2. Note that the Fengfu Point can be massaged but not moxibusted. Wind relies on the strength of fire and will become more rampant, wandering chaotically within the body.
