Unlocking Vitality: The Power of Massaging the Yamen Point

November 23, 2023

The Yamen point is located in the neck, at the intersection of the Du meridian and the Yang Wei meridian. It is surrounded by the nuchal ligament, nuchal muscles, trapezius muscle, semispinalis capitis muscle, splenius capitis muscle, and the greater and lesser occipital nerves. It serves as a pivotal point for neck movement. Let's take a look at the benefits of massaging the Yamen point.

Origin of the name Yamen point

The term "Ya" refers to the decline of Yang Qi, while "men" means entrance or gate. The Yamen point receives the Yang heat from the Da Zhui point, and as it disperses heat, it contracts. If the dispersal and contraction of Yang Qi is excessive, it can lead to loss of voice. Hence the name Yamen point.

Accurate location of the Yamen point: It is located in the nape of the neck, 0.5 cun directly above the midpoint of the posterior hairline. When sitting upright and slightly leaning the head forward, the Yamen point is located in the depression at the upper border of the second cervical vertebrae spinous process, on the midline of the posterior aspect.

Benefits of massaging the Yamen point

Due to degeneration or strain of local tissues, the Yamen point is prone to stagnation of meridians and poor circulation of Qi and blood. Massaging the Yamen point can promote the circulation of meridians, reduce compression on blood vessels, improve cerebral blood supply, and alleviate speech disorders caused by strokes. It also aids in the recovery of cerebral thrombosis and cerebral hemorrhage.

Indications of massaging the Yamen point

In traditional Chinese medicine, this point is often used to treat conditions such as aphasia, hoarseness, epilepsy, hysteria, headache, and neck stiffness. It can also help treat conditions like spinal deviation, stroke, nosebleeds, and vomiting. When experiencing a nosebleed, applying an ice pack to the Yamen point can help stop the bleeding quickly.

Method of massaging the Yamen point

Gently press the Yamen point with the index fingers of both hands. Hold the pressure for a few seconds, and repeat this process 10 times, once in the morning, once in the afternoon, and once in the evening.

Precautions for massaging the Yamen point

When massaging the Yamen point, it is appropriate to feel a strong sense of soreness and swelling in the local area, accompanied by slight pain.
