Massage Techniques for Children's Hiccups: Effective Ways to Relieve Symptoms

There are many reasons for children to hiccup, such as eating too fast, overeating, mental stimulation or laughter, coughing, and changes in body position. Massage techniques can effectively relieve hiccup symptoms. Let's take a look at the massage techniques for children's hiccups.

Rub Zan Zhu for 3-5 minutes

Location: The inner recess of the eyebrows.

Massage technique: The masseur uses the thumbs of both hands to continuously rub the Zan Zhu point on the inner recess of the child's eyebrows, starting with light pressure and gradually increasing to 3-5 minutes.

Rub Tian Tu 15 times

Location: The center of the hollow above the sternum.

Massage technique: The masseur uses the middle fingertip to massage the Tian Tu point on the center of the child's hollow above the sternum 15 times.

Rub Shen Zhong for 1 minute

Location: The midpoint of the line connecting the two nipples.

Massage technique: The masseur uses the middle finger or thumb fingertip to massage the Shen Zhong point at the midpoint of the line connecting the two nipples of the child for 1 minute.

Rub the abdomen for 5 minutes

Location: The middle of the abdomen, around the belly button.

Massage technique: The masseur uses the palm or index, middle, and ring fingers to gently rub the child's abdomen in a clockwise and counterclockwise direction for 5 minutes.

Rub Zhong Wan for 5 minutes

Location: 4 inches directly above the center of the belly button.

Massage technique: The masseur uses the thumb to rotate and rub the Zhong Wan point at a location 4 inches directly above the center of the child's belly button for 5 minutes.

Rub Wei Yu for 1 minute

Location: Two fingers' width below the spinous process of the twelfth thoracic vertebra on the back.

Massage technique: Place the child in a prone position, and the masseur uses the thumbs of both hands to massage the bilateral Wei Yu points below the spinous process of the twelfth thoracic vertebra for 1 minute.

Rub Da Chang Yu for 1 minute

Location: Two fingers' width on each side below the spinous process of the fourth lumbar vertebra.

Massage technique: The masseur uses the thumb fingertip to massage the Da Chang Yu points on each side below the spinous process of the fourth lumbar vertebra, simultaneously rubbing for 1 minute.

Pinch the earlobe

The masseur uses the thumbs and index fingers of both hands to pinch the child's earlobes and pull them downward with force. The force should stimulate the base of the earlobe, and the movement should be slow to avoid injuring the child. Repeat several times until the hiccup disappears.

Considerations for children's hiccup massage

During the massage process, it is advisable to have the child lie on their back when massaging the Zan Zhu point. Before massaging the Wei Yu and Da Chang Yu points, it is best to use the entire palm to rub the back until the child feels warm before proceeding with the massage.
