Storing and Consuming Huangjing: Tips and Precautions

November 19, 2023

Huangjing (Polygonatum) is a commonly used medicinal herb. Many families use Huangjing to cook soup or make wine. So, how should Huangjing be stored?

How to Store Huangjing

Processed Huangjing

1. Refrigeration. To prevent mold and insect infestation, processed Huangjing is commonly stored in the refrigerator.

2. Store in a cool and dry place. Put the processed Huangjing in a container, seal it, and store it in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight.

Fresh Huangjing

1. Low-temperature storage. After air-drying the fresh Huangjing to remove surface moisture, it can be stored in the refrigerator. It is not recommended to store it at room temperature, as it is prone to mold and insect infestation.

2. Sun-drying. Clean the fresh Huangjing, cut it into thick slices, and sun-dry it. Then, store it in a cool and dry place.

Can Huangjing be Frozen?

Yes, it can.

Huangjing is the rhizome of plants in the Polygonatum genus and contains a lot of moisture. Therefore, it is prone to mold and insect infestation. Under freezing conditions, low temperatures can inhibit the growth of bacteria, freeze moisture, and extend the storage time. It is less likely to become moldy.

How Long Can Huangjing be Stored?

Processed Huangjing

Around 1 year.

Processed Huangjing is usually made with alcohol, so it has a higher moisture content and sweetness. It is more prone to mold and deterioration. Generally, processed Huangjing can be stored for about 1 year. With proper storage, it can last even longer.

Fresh Huangjing

About 1 week.

If the fresh Huangjing has not undergone special processing, it can be stored for about 1 week. Due to its high moisture content, it is prone to rotting and deterioration. The longer it is stored, the more nutrients it loses. Therefore, it is recommended to consume fresh Huangjing as soon as possible.

Can Huangjing Still be Consumed if Stored for a Long Time?

Processed Huangjing

For processed Huangjing, if it has been stored for a long time but does not show signs of white mold, mold spots, or insects, it can still be consumed. However, if any of the mentioned issues occur, it should not be consumed to avoid health risks.

Fresh Huangjing

For fresh Huangjing, if it has not become rotten or spoiled, it can still be consumed. If it has severely decayed, it should not be consumed as its nutritional content has been lost and there may be bacterial growth, which can cause gastrointestinal discomfort.

What Precautions Should Be Taken When Consuming Huangjing?

1. Pay attention to the dosage.

The recommended dosage of Huangjing is generally 9-15 grams. Due to its greasy nature and strong tonic effects, excessive intake can lead to the accumulation of dampness and hinder the normal functioning of the spleen and stomach, causing indigestion and decreased appetite.

2. Not suitable for those with excessive phlegm-dampness.

Symptoms such as obesity, limb edema, oily face, pale complexion, thick and swollen tongue, and sticky mouth indicate excessive phlegm-dampness. Since Huangjing itself has a greasy and tonic nature, taking it can further hinder the digestion and transformation of the spleen and stomach, worsening the existing symptoms.

3. Not suitable for those with cold and diarrhea.

If there is a weak and cold middle burner and symptoms of diarrhea, Huangjing should not be consumed. Otherwise, it will not alleviate the symptoms but instead aggravate them.
