Pediatric pharyngitis can occur independently or as a symptom of other diseases such as colds, wind-heat, summer-heat, and pediatric fever. Below, I will teach you some pediatric pharyngitis massage techniques.
Causes and Pathology of Pediatric Pharyngitis
This disease is mostly caused by the invasion of the throat by wind-heat pathogenic factors or the scorching of the throat by the accumulation of heat in the lungs and stomach, leading to local heat accumulation, damage to body fluids, phlegm accumulation, and stasis. The combination of heat, phlegm, and stasis becomes a stubborn disease. In the later stages, due to the damage to the lung and stomach fluids or the damage to the kidney yin, deficiency fire flares up and causes burning pain and swelling in the throat. Deficiency is the main factor in this stage.
Massage for Pharyngitis with Lung and Stomach Heat Excess
Main symptoms: red and swollen throat, pain, difficulty swallowing or feeling like there are silkworm cocoons on both sides of the throat, hoarse voice, restlessness, rapid breathing, occasional phlegm rattling, and may be accompanied by facial redness, dry lips, cough, red tongue with yellow dry coating, rapid pulse, and purple fingerprints. This is a qi closure pattern.
Treatment principles: clear heat, reduce swelling, open and close, and benefit the throat.
Massage prescription: rub Xiaotianxin, rub Yiwofeng, clear the stomach meridian, clear the lung meridian, open Xuanyu, and withdraw the six fu.
Explanation: Xiaotianxin activates meridians and collaterals, disperses and resolves throat obstruction; Yiwofeng disperses and resolves external pathogens; clears the lung meridian and the stomach meridian to eliminate lung and stomach heat; combines with withdrawing the six fu to extinguish the source of the heat and guide it downward; Xuanyu opens the upper, middle, and lower jiaos, disperses and resolves obstructions, lowers qi, and eliminates heat. Together, they clear heat, reduce swelling, open and close, and benefit the throat.
Massage for Pharyngitis with Lung and Kidney Yin Deficiency
Main symptoms: discomfort or pain in the throat, especially severe in the morning, hoarse voice or low voice, continuous vomiting, pale or dull red throat, lymphoid follicles in the posterior throat, dry mouth, dry cough or bloody phlegm, red tongue, thin and rapid pulse, and thin fingerprints.
Treatment principles: nourish the lungs and kidneys, dispel obstruction in the throat.
Massage prescription: massage the kidney water point, massage the upper part of the spine, pinch the spine, clear the Banmen point, rub Xiaotianxin, rub Tiantu, grasp the throat knot, and guide the celestial river water.
Explanation: The lungs are in the upper position, so they should be cleared and cool; the kidneys are in the lower position, so they should be nourished and raised. The lungs and kidneys support each other. If the kidney yin is insufficient, deficiency fire will flare up, scorching the lung metal. Insufficient lung fluids will also lead to insufficient kidney yin. Therefore, the main acupuncture point is the kidney water point, and the upper part of the spine is massaged to nourish yin and moisten dryness. The Banmen point is cleared to reduce fire. Xiaotianxin is massaged to activate meridians and collaterals, which can dispel obstruction and benefit the throat. Guiding the celestial river water can nourish yin and clear heat. This method treats the lungs and kidneys simultaneously. Massaging Tiantu and grasping the throat knot is a local treatment, which can improve local blood circulation and enhance local barrier function. It is an effective method to increase moisture and benefit the throat.
Tips
Massage therapy for pharyngitis is effective.
During the acute phase, when the symptoms are severe and there is obstruction in the throat, the focus is on relieving the symptoms. In most cases, it can alleviate the crisis. However, if this condition is not handled properly or if the treatment is delayed, it can often lead to a dangerous situation. Therefore, while performing massage therapy, it is necessary to consider or prepare for comprehensive treatment measures such as acupuncture, bloodletting, infusion, oxygen therapy, etc., to prevent accidents. For chronic pharyngitis, most patients are resistant to antibiotics, and the efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine is also limited. For some children, especially those with mild symptoms, it is often very effective.
