Massage Techniques for Tonsillitis in Children: Alleviating Symptoms and Promoting Healing

November 16, 2023

Tonsillitis in children is a common pediatric condition, with a higher incidence rate among children aged 4 to 6 years. The tonsils serve as the body's first line of immune defense in the respiratory system, but their protective capacity is limited. When exposed to a large number or highly virulent pathogens, inflammation can occur. Through massage of specific acupoints, heat can be cleared and swelling reduced, thereby alleviating symptoms. Let's take a look at the massage techniques for tonsillitis in children.

Press and Rub Neiguan Point

Location: Located on the palmar side of the forearm, 2 inches above the wrist crease, between the flexor carpi radialis tendon and the palmaris longus tendon.

Procedure: Use the thumb to press and rub the Neiguan point with moderate force for 1-2 minutes, until a local feeling of soreness and swelling is achieved.

Press and Rub Hegu Point

Location: Located on the back of the hand, between the first and second metacarpal bones, at the midpoint of the radial side of the second metacarpal bone.

Procedure: Use the thumb to press and rub the Hegu point for 1-2 minutes, until a local feeling of soreness and swelling is achieved.

Clearing the Lung Meridian

Location: Located on the volar surface of the distal phalanx of the ring finger.

Procedure: Use the thumb to massage from the gap between the ring finger to the base of the finger for 1-2 minutes, until the skin feels warm.

Press and Hold Feishu Point

Location: Located below the spinous process of the third thoracic vertebra, 1.5 inches to the side.

Procedure: Use the thumb to press and hold the Feishu point 50-100 times, until a local feeling of soreness and swelling is achieved.

Tonsillitis Massage According to Different Conditions

Wind-heat invasion type: Main symptoms include chills, fever, sore and difficult swallowing, nasal congestion, fatigue, and headache. Additional acupoints to be massaged include Xiaotianxin and Shixin.

Yin deficiency and excessive heat type: Main symptoms include persistent low-grade fever, worsening in the afternoon, dry throat, slight sore throat, dry cough without sputum, and feeling of foreign objects when swallowing. Additional acupoints to be massaged include Sanguan and Qingpijing.

Benefits of Tonsillitis Massage

Massage of the above acupoints mainly has the effects of dispersing wind, releasing the surface, regulating lung function, and clearing heat, which can relieve discomfort in the throat, as well as symptoms such as fever, nasal congestion, and headache.
