November 15, 2023

The Huan Tiao acupuncture point is located in the middle of the hip joint. When lying on one side, extend the leg and flex the foot to stretch the knee and hip, creating a curved shape resembling a jump. Therefore, it is named Huan Tiao. The muscles in the Huan Tiao area are thick and often used for massage therapy in health care, but sometimes pain may occur during the massage. So, what causes the pain in Huan Tiao?

Causes of Huan Tiao pain

The Huan Tiao acupuncture point is adjacent to the piriformis muscle. If there is local pain, it is generally related to muscle injuries such as strains, sprains, and chronic injuries. If the pain extends to the lower limbs, it is necessary to consider whether there are diseases in the waist and buttocks, such as lumbar disc herniation and lumbar muscle strain.

Treatment methods for Huan Tiao pain

Huan Tiao pain is often associated with lumbar disc herniation, lumbar strain, and sciatica. When pain occurs, it is best to seek medical examination and receive treatment based on the examination results. Acupuncture, massage, traction, and physical therapy are commonly used for treatment.

Patients are advised to sleep on a firm mattress and use a small pillow to support the waist during sleep. Engaging in regular exercise can improve the function of the lumbar muscles, but be cautious of twisting movements and try to avoid bending the waist too much.

Functions and benefits of Huan Tiao

Huan Tiao belongs to the Gallbladder Meridian of Foot Shaoyang, which is the meeting point of the Foot Shaoyang and Taiyang meridians. It is located in the buttocks and has the functions of dispelling wind and dampness, relaxing tendons and activating collaterals, promoting joint mobility, invigorating blood circulation and resolving blood stasis, relieving cold and pain, dispersing Shaoyang wind-heat, and relieving itching. It is an important acupoint for treating waist and leg pain. In clinical practice, it is commonly used to treat waist and hip pain, hemiplegia, lower limb paralysis, lumbar sprain, and inability to turn the knee and ankle.

Furthermore, the Huan Tiao acupuncture point is close to the hip joint. Massaging this point can improve blood circulation in the buttocks, reduce accumulation of subcutaneous fat in the lower body, eliminate edema, burn fat in the buttocks, and prevent sagging of the buttocks.
