Can Saffron Alleviate Gout Symptoms?

November 11, 2023

I have been suffering from gout for many years and have tried many methods to alleviate it. I heard from others that drinking saffron can treat gout, so I bought some saffron to try. I would like to ask if saffron is effective in treating gout.

Is Saffron Effective for Gout?

Saffron does not have any significant therapeutic effect on gout.

Gout is a form of arthritis caused by the deposition of monosodium urate crystals in the joints, directly related to hyperuricemia caused by disorders in purine metabolism or decreased uric acid excretion.

Saffron is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb with the effects of promoting blood circulation, resolving stasis, and calming the mind. It is mainly used to treat various symptoms caused by blood stasis. However, traditional Chinese medicine believes that gout is caused by wind, cold, dampness, and stagnation, which eventually leads to pain caused by heat, and is not significantly related to blood stasis. Therefore, saffron does not have any obvious therapeutic effect on gout.

Can Gout Patients Drink Saffron?

Yes, they can.

Although saffron does not have any significant therapeutic effect on gout, it also does not worsen gout symptoms. Furthermore, saffron has certain sedative and calming effects, improves immunity, and protects cardiovascular and cerebrovascular health. Therefore, gout patients can drink saffron in moderation.

How to Drink Saffron for Gout Patients

Saffron Infusion

1. Take 5-8 saffron threads and put them into a teacup.

2. Add boiling water and cover it.

3. Let it steep for about 3 minutes, then drink after cooling.

4. You can add more water 3-4 times during the process.

Saffron Rice

1. Rinse the rice and add water.

2. Add about 5-10 saffron threads and mix well.

3. Cook until done and then consume.

Precautions for Drinking Saffron for Gout

1. Do not consume excessive amounts.

The recommended medicinal dosage of saffron is generally 1-3 grams. Due to its strong physiological activity, excessive consumption may lead to toxic reactions such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, and even fainting.

2. Do not consume daily.

Saffron has stimulating effects on the nerves and blood vessels. Consuming it daily may cause discomfort such as increased mental excitement or excessive internal heat. It is recommended to take a break of 1 day after every 2-3 days of consumption.

3. Not suitable for individuals with ulcers or bleeding.

Saffron has a strong blood circulation and stasis-resolving effect, which can stimulate the blood vessels in the gastrointestinal tract. It may cause the rupture and bleeding of ulcers or increase bleeding in the affected area. Therefore, individuals with gastric or intestinal ulcers or bleeding should not consume saffron.

Treatment for Gout Stones

Gout stones are caused by the lack of timely and effective treatment during the course of gout. Gout stones usually occur when the uric acid level in the body remains high for a long time. Currently, there is no effective treatment for gout stones, and the main focus is on relieving gout symptoms. Here are some preventive and treatment methods for gout stones:

1. Drink plenty of water. Gout patients can drink more water, which can help dissolve uric acid to a certain extent and facilitate its excretion from the body. This can help prevent the occurrence of gout stones.

2. Eat more alkaline foods. Examples include kelp, almonds, fresh fruits, and vegetables. These foods can supplement the body with vitamins and fiber, and help reduce the intake of purines.

3. Exercise more. Gout patients can engage in moderate physical activities such as jogging, brisk walking, cycling, and climbing stairs. This can help burn excess fat in the body, control weight gain, and also improve immunity, reducing the frequency of gout attacks.
