November 8, 2023

The Su Liang point, with "su" meaning white and "liang" referring to bone holes or acupuncture points in general, is located in the nose. Since the lung is associated with the color white and the nose is the opening of the lung, this point is named Su Liang. Below, we will provide a detailed description of the accurate location and functions of the Su Liang point.

Accurate Location of the Su Liang Point

It is located in the middle of the nose tip.

Anatomical description: It is situated in the nasal tip cartilage, with facial movements, nasal dorsum veins, and branches of the anterior ethmoidal nerve.

Effect and Mechanism of the Su Liang Point

Effect: Clearing heat and opening the orifices, relieving collapse and reversing counterflow.

Indications: Nasal congestion, epistaxis, nasal sores, alcoholic nose, neonatal asphyxia, convulsions, and coma.

Mechanism: The Su Liang point belongs to the Du channel and is located at the nose tip. It can clear heat, promote meridian circulation, and open the orifices, treating nasal congestion, epistaxis, nasal sores, and alcoholic nose. Since the lung opens to the nose, this point can also treat neonatal asphyxia caused by lung qi failure to communicate. As the Su Liang point belongs to the Du channel and its qi travels downward to the Ren channel, it can regulate the qi of the Ren channel, balance yin and yang, and relieve collapse and reverse counterflow, treating convulsions and coma.

Function of the Su Liang Point

The nose is the orifice of the lung, responsible for breathing and the knowledge of respiration. Among the five elements, the lung governs the color white, hence the name Su Liang, with "su" representing white and "liang" referring to acupuncture points. According to traditional Chinese medicine, the dampness of the Du channel liquefies and descends at the Su Liang point, thus it has the function of awakening the mind and opening the orifices. Additionally, the Su Liang point has the function of relieving collapse and reversing counterflow. In emergency situations, needling this point can produce immediate effects. Diseases that affect smooth breathing, cause asthma, or lead to suffocation can be treated by pressing this point. As the Su Liang point belongs to the Du channel, it can also be pressed in cases where the upward movement of yang qi to the brain is hindered, resulting in low blood pressure, coma, and convulsions. Furthermore, since the Su Liang point is located in the nose, it naturally falls within the scope of treatment for nasal diseases such as alcoholic nose.
