Relieving Stomach Bloating and Indigestion: Acupoints and Massage Techniques

Feeling discomfort or pain in the upper abdomen, bloating, indigestion, heartburn, acid reflux, and belching are common symptoms of stomach bloating and indigestion. Massage can be used to quickly release the gas in the stomach and relieve these symptoms. Regular massage of these acupoints can also promote digestion and improve gastrointestinal function.

Zhongwan Acupoint

Location: Zhongwan acupoint is located in the upper abdomen, on the midline between the lower end of the sternum and the umbilical line. Lie flat on your back, and this acupoint is on the upper abdomen, on the midline.

Effect: The substances of this acupoint directly act on the stomach, and can directly regulate the balance of yin and yang in the stomach. It is mainly used to treat digestive system diseases such as abdominal distension, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and borborygmus. It also has a good effect on general stomach problems and loss of appetite.

Massage: Use your hands to push and knead the acupoint for 3-5 minutes, or use scraping method with the edge of your hand to stimulate the acupoint. It is recommended to do this once every other day to treat bloating, vomiting, and quickly release the gas in the stomach.

Neiting Acupoint

Location: Neiting acupoint belongs to the foot Yangming Stomach meridian. It is located on the dorsum of the foot, slightly posterior to the midpoint between the second and third toes, just before the second and third metatarsophalangeal joints. Pressing on the point will produce a sore and distended feeling.

Effect: This acupoint has the functions of clearing the stomach, resolving fire, regulating qi, and relieving pain. It is commonly used to treat stomach pain, bloating, indigestion, weak stomach and diseases caused by acute or chronic enteritis. It can also be used to treat toothache, gingivitis, tonsillitis, insomnia, headache, facial pain, and foot dorsum swelling and pain. Regular massage of this acupoint can effectively relieve stomach problems and improve symptoms such as indigestion and stomach spasms.

Massage: Use your fingertip to press and massage the Neiting acupoint on the foot for about 1 minute. This can effectively relieve symptoms such as stomach bloating and pain, and release the gas in the stomach.

 

Neiguan Acupoint

Location: Neiguan acupoint is located on the palmar side of the forearm, on the line connecting the Laogong acupoint and the Daling acupoint, 2 inches above the wrist crease.

Effect: This acupoint is a meeting point of eight meridians. It has the effects of calming the mind, soothing the nerves, regulating qi, and relieving pain. It is mainly used to treat diseases of the pericardium, heart, and stomach, and can improve symptoms such as epigastric pain, nausea, vomiting, arm pain, headache, dizziness, red and swollen eyes, and other symptoms.

Massage: Hold the lower end of the arm being massaged with one hand, and press vertically on the Neiguan acupoint with the other hand, rhythmically applying pressure until a sour, numb, and distended feeling is produced. Massage twice a day for about 2-3 minutes each time to release the gas in the stomach.

Ganyu Acupoint

Location: Ganyu acupoint is located on the back, below the ninth thoracic vertebra spinous process, about 1.5 inches away.

Effect: It clears and benefits the liver and gallbladder, calms the mind and brightens the eyes, nourishes blood and eliminates stasis. It is mainly used to treat symptoms such as epigastric pain and distension, chest and hypochondrium fullness, jaundice and chest tightness, acid regurgitation, indigestion, red and itchy eyes, cataracts, green blindness, mania, and other diseases.

Massage: Use the thumb to rub and press the Ganyu acupoint 100-200 times until a local sore and distended feeling is felt, to help release the gas in the stomach.

 

Weiyu Acupoint

Location: Weiyu acupoint is located on the back, below the twelfth thoracic vertebra spinous process, about 1.5 inches away.

Effect: It regulates the stomach and harmonizes the middle, dispels dampness and dissolves accumulation. It is mainly used to treat symptoms such as weakness of the spleen and stomach, epigastric pain and distension, cholera, gastric upset and vomiting, poor appetite, weight loss despite eating, intestinal rumbling, jaundice and edema, infantile malnutrition, chest and hypochondrium fullness, lumbar and spine spasms, and other diseases.

Massage: Use the thumb to rub and press the Weiyu acupoint 100-200 times until a local sore and distended feeling is felt.

 

Piyu Acupoint

Location: Piyu acupoint is located on the back, below the eleventh thoracic vertebra spinous process, about 1.5 inches away.

Effect: It invigorates the spleen and harmonizes the stomach, promotes dampness and raises clear. It is mainly used to treat symptoms such as vomiting, stomach pain, chest and hypochondrium distension and pain, jaundice and edema, loss of appetite, failure to generate muscles from food, diarrhea, dysentery, phlegm malaria cold and heat, limbs not recovering, asthenia, hematuria, spermatorrhea, leukorrhea, vomiting blood, and bloody stool.

Massage: Use the thumb to rub and press the Piyu acupoint 100-200 times until a local sore and distended feeling is felt, to release the gas in the stomach.

 

Sanjiao Acupoint

Location: Sanjiao acupoint is located on the waist, below the first lumbar vertebra spinous process, about 1.5 inches away.

Effect: It regulates the three burners, promotes diuresis and strengthens the waist. It is mainly used to treat symptoms such as abdominal distension, intestinal rumbling, vomiting, diarrhea, edema, abdominal distension, jaundice, bedwetting, urinary retention, lumbar spine pain, and other diseases.

Massage: Use the thumb to rub and press the Sanjiao acupoint 100-200 times until a local sore and distended feeling is felt, to release the gas in the stomach.

 

Zusanli Acupoint

Location: Zusanli acupoint is located below the outer knee, four finger-widths below the tibial tuberosity, along the edge of the tibia.

Effect: This acupoint promotes the generation of stomach qi and transforms dampness in the spleen. It is an important acupoint for health preservation. It is commonly used to treat various diseases such as acute and chronic gastritis, duodenal ulcer, gastric ptosis, dysentery, appendicitis, intestinal obstruction, hepatitis, etc. It can improve symptoms such as stomach pain, vomiting, abdominal distension, abdominal pain, borborygmus, and indigestion.

Massage: Apply moderate pressure to knead the acupoint until a sour and numb feeling is felt along the meridian to the dorsum of the foot. This can help release the gas in the stomach.

 

Sifeng Acupoint

Location: Sifeng acupoint is located on the palmar side of the hand, on the central part between the second and fifth metacarpophalangeal joints.

Effect: Originally used to treat indigestion in children, it has been proven to be effective for adults as well. It can treat symptoms such as epigastric pain, abdominal pain, abdominal distension, sore throat, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, belching, heat stroke, etc.

Massage: Directly press and knead the four acupoints with your hand until a sore and numb feeling is felt, to release the gas in the stomach.

Gongsun Acupoint

Location: Gongsun acupoint is located on the medial side of the foot, in the front and below the base of the first metatarsal bone, on both sides.

Effect: Gongsun acupoint is an acupoint of the foot Taiyin Spleen meridian, which connects with the foot Yangming Stomach meridian. Its main function is to regulate the spleen and stomach. It is one of the main acupoints for treating digestive system diseases. It can be used to treat indigestion, abdominal distension, diarrhea, and edema caused by weak spleen and stomach.

Massage: Press the Gongsun acupoint on the same side with the thumb for 1-3 minutes, until a sore and distended feeling is felt, to release the gas in the stomach.
