The Healing Power of Hirudin: Promoting Blood Circulation, Relieving Pain, and More

October 16, 2023

Hirudin, also known as Qilin Blood or Qijie, is a resin extracted from the fruit of the palm family plant Qilinjie. It is mainly produced in Indonesia, Malaysia, Guangdong in China, and Taiwan. Hirudin has the effects of promoting blood circulation, relieving pain, resolving stasis, stopping bleeding, promoting wound healing, and treating injuries, abdominal pain, external bleeding, and non-healing ulcers.

Promoting blood circulation and relieving pain

Hirudin has a salty taste and enters the blood channels, primarily affecting the heart and liver meridians. It can promote blood circulation, resolve stasis, reduce swelling, and relieve pain. It is an important medicine for treating external injuries, internal stasis pain, dysmenorrhea, postpartum abdominal pain due to stasis, and various types of abdominal pain caused by blood stasis.

Stopping bleeding

Hirudin not only resolves stasis but also stops bleeding. It has the characteristic of preventing blood from stagnating. It is suitable for conditions where blood stasis blocks the circulation and leads to bleeding, especially external bleeding. It can be applied topically to stop bleeding. For conditions with both stasis and bleeding, Hirudin can resolve stasis, stop bleeding, and relieve pain.

Promoting the healing of abscesses

Hirudin can promote blood circulation, reduce swelling, resolve stasis, and promote granulation tissue formation. It can be used to treat non-healing ulcers or painful abscesses that have not closed for a long time. Topical application can accelerate the healing of abscesses.

Antibacterial effects

The aqueous extract of Hirudin has varying degrees of inhibitory effects on Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus albus, and various pathogenic fungi.

Antithrombotic effects

The alcohol precipitation of the water decoction of Hirudin can significantly decrease blood cell hematocrit, shorten plasma recalcification time, inhibit platelet aggregation, and prevent thrombus formation.

Nutritional value of Hirudin

Hirudin mainly contains hirudin, hirudin red, demethylhirudin, demethylhirudin red, flavonoids, chalcones, and resin acids.

1. Hirudin and hirudin red can reduce whole blood viscosity, plasma viscosity, and hematocrit, shorten erythrocyte electrophoresis time, and inhibit thrombus formation.

2. The aqueous extract of Hirudin has varying degrees of inhibitory effects on Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus albus, and various pathogenic fungi.

Contraindications for the use of Hirudin

1. It is not suitable to take during menstruation to avoid increasing menstrual flow.

2. It is not suitable for individuals without blood stasis.

3. Pregnant women should avoid using Hirudin. Hirudin promotes blood circulation, which can stimulate the uterus and is not beneficial to the fetus.
