What does the color of the fire cupping represent

September 16, 2023
Fire cupping is a long-established method of health care with Chinese characteristics. Cupping can help the body get rid of wind, cold and dampness, and the color of the spots left by cupping varies from person to person, depending on the quality of the body. We can learn how to identify the color of fire cupping?

Deep red or purple-black color

If the color is deep red or purple-black, slightly painful to the touch and the body is hot, it indicates that the person is suffering from heat toxicity; if the body is not hot, it indicates that the person is suffering from siltation.

Purple-black and dull color

If the color is purple-black and dull, it usually indicates insufficient blood supply in the body, poor meridians and blood stasis. Another possibility is that the cupping area is severely cold, which also results in purple-black and dull marks.

Purple color with plaques

This usually indicates cold clotting and blood stasis.

Purple dots of varying shades

Generally indicates evidence of Qi stagnation and blood stasis.

Pale purple and greenish color with plaques

It is usually a deficiency symptom with blood stasis. For example, if it is present at the kidney point, it indicates kidney deficiency, while if it is at the spleen point, it indicates qi deficiency and blood stasis. This point is often accompanied by pressure pain.

Bright red and colorful

It usually indicates Yin deficiency, Qi and Yin deficiency. This mark can also appear in the case of Yin deficiency and fire.

With bright red scattered dots

Usually appears after a large area of walking the jar and is not higher than the skin. If it occurs in and around the acupuncture point, it is indicative of the presence of disease and evil in the internal organs where the point is located. (There are clinical cases where such red spots are sought by walking the jar and treated with acupuncture.)

Grayish color

The color of cupping is gray and not warm to the touch, which generally indicates the presence of cold and dampness in the body.

Other phenomena

Cupping marks with lines and slight itching indicate wind and dampness. Watery air inside the cupping body indicates dampness in the area. The presence of blisters in the jar seal indicates heavy dampness in the body, and if there is blood inside the blisters, it is a reflection of hot dampness and toxicity.

Caution

After cupping the marks generally fade in 1~2 weeks, if the marks do not fade for several days, it often indicates that the disease has been in progress for a long time and needs more treatment. If large black and purple marks appear in the cupping jar, it indicates that the area offended by wind and cold is very large and should be treated symptomatically to expel the cold and remove the evil.
