The efficacy and effects of verbena and contraindications and methods of consumption

April 5, 2023
Verbena officinalis is bitter and cold. It enters the liver and spleen meridians. It is mainly used for treating external fever, damp-heat jaundice, edema, dysentery, malaria, diphtheria, laryngeal paralysis, gonorrhea, menorrhagia, obstruction, carbuncle, sores and venom, and dental chancre, etc. The following is a detailed description of the effects and contraindications of verbena and how to consume it.

Clearing heat and detoxifying

Verbena has a bitter taste and is cool in nature, and has the effect of clearing heat and detoxifying the toxin, which is useful for treating external fever, sore throat, swollen gums, and other diseases.

Promoting blood circulation and dispersing blood stasis

Verbena officinalis enters the liver and spleen meridians and is good at activating blood circulation and dispersing blood stasis, which is useful for treating obstruction, carbuncle and sores, menstrual stasis, dysmenorrhea and bruises.

Promote water retention and subdue swelling

Verbena is good for treating gonorrhea, edema, dysuria, damp-heat jaundice and dysentery.

Anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving

The aqueous and alcoholic extracts of Verbena officinalis have anti-inflammatory effects on inflammation caused by mustard oil in the conjunctival sacs of rabbits in dropping homes. The analgesic effect of the aqueous extract (rabbit dental pulp electrical stimulation method) started 1 hour after administration and disappeared after 3 hours.

Anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect

Both the aqueous and alcoholic extracts had anti-inflammatory effects on inflammation caused by mustard oil dripped into the conjunctival sac of rabbits, with the latter having a better anti-inflammatory effect than the former. The water-soluble fraction of the latter was in turn better than the water-insoluble fraction. The analgesic effect of the aqueous extract on pain induced by electrical stimulation of the dental pulp of rabbits started at 1h after administration and disappeared at 3h; the analgesic effect of the alcoholic extract was still shown to disappear completely after 6h, and the water-soluble fraction was more effective, while the water-insoluble fraction had no analgesic effect.

Excitation of uterus

Verbena officinalis at a concentration of 1.6×10-2g/ml showed some excitatory effects on myometrium strips of rats and non-pregnant human myometrium strips. In rat myometrial strips, specimens in the motility phase were the most sensitive to vervain, and the addition of vervain often caused an increase in both tension and contraction amplitude; whereas specimens in other phases often showed only an increase in contraction amplitude. Human myometrium strips were less responsive to vervain, generally with only a change in tonicity. In the rat myometrial strip assay, vervain and PGE2 had a mutually reinforcing effect, whereas with PGF2a there was only an additive effect. At concentrations sufficient to excite uterine smooth muscle, vervain had no significant effect on jejunal smooth muscle and did not enhance the effect of PGE2 on jejunal smooth muscle.

Other effects

1. Veratrine and verbenin are similar in chemical and pharmacological properties, and have small excitatory and large inhibitory effects on sympathetic nerve endings. To mammals can promote milk secretion. Its toxicity is very low, not hemolytic, and has a parasympathetic effect. 2、Hemostatic effect: Verbenin (a kind of glycoside) extracted from the dried whole herb has the effect of promoting blood coagulation in rabbits. 3, cough suppressant effect: verbena decoction has a certain cough suppressant effect, the effective components of its cough suppressant are β-sitosterol and verbascoside. 4, toxicity of its toxicity is very low, non-hemolytic, parasympathetic effect.

Usage and dosage

Verbena is used internally: decoction, 0.5-1 taels (fresh pounded juice 1-2 taels); or into pills, scatter. For external use: pounding or decoction.

Edible method

1: Take vervain 2500 grams, decoct and remove the slag to collect the paste, half a spoonful per serving, hot wine down, 2 times a day. 2、Take vervain in appropriate amount, pound it like mud and apply it to the affected area; for treating canker sores: take a handful of vervain, a bowl of wine, a piece of ginger, pound the juice together and take it internally, and apply it to the affected area with the dregs. 3、Take 60-150 grams of fresh vervain (half of the dried product), add water and decoct it into 300 ml, take it 4 hours and 2 hours before the attack, and take it for 2-4 days.

Contraindications to the use of medicine

1. This species is a poisonous plant included in the Chinese plant atlas database. Its toxicity is that the whole herb is slightly toxic, and the preparation can treat malaria, diphtheria, influenza, etc. Some people have reactions such as nausea, dizziness, headache, vomiting and abdominal pain after taking it. It should be taken with caution by pregnant women. 2, "Ben Cao Jing Shu": "Although the patient has damp heat and blood heat evidence, spleen yin deficiency and weak stomach qi should not be taken." 3. "The Materia Medica from the New": "For those who have had sores for a long time and are deficient, use at your discretion."
