Turmeric, also known as Baodingxiang and Huanggeang, is bitter; pungent; warm in nature and belongs to the spleen meridian; liver meridian. It can break the blood and move the qi; pass through the menstruation to relieve pain. Here I'll look at the specific effects and contraindications of turmeric.

Warming and dispersing stagnation

It is good at relieving pain and treating symptoms such as blood stagnation and blood stasis, chest pain, chest paralysis and heartache, dysmenorrhea and amenorrhea, obstruction of the abdomen, and pain and swelling.

Warming the meridians

Curcuma longa is pungent, warm and bitter, dispersing wind, cold and dampness externally, promoting the circulation of Qi and blood internally, and relieving menstrual pain. It is especially good for moving limbs and arms to remove paralysis and pain. It is often used together with Qiangwu, Fangfeng and Angelicae to dispel wind-dampness and invigorate blood.

Promoting bile

Turmeric decoction and infusion can increase bile secretion in dogs, normalize bile composition and increase gallbladder contraction, with weak but long-lasting effects lasting 1-2 hours. Experiment: Curcumin or its sodium salt has a biliary effect. Intravenous injection in dogs reduces the content of solid components and increases bile secretion, but in terms of total absolute values, bile salt, bilirubin and cholesterol secretion are increased and fatty acid components remain constant.

Antibacterial and anti-inflammatory

Curcumin and the volatile oil fraction had a good antibacterial effect on Staphylococcus aureus. The aqueous infusion of turmeric had different degrees of inhibitory effects on a variety of skin fungi in the test tube. Experiment: The decoction prolongs the survival time of mice inoculated with virus, but it is ineffective against liver injury on top of viral hepatitis tomb plus chemical (carbon tetrachloride). In addition turmeric preparations can kill flies. Its volatile oil and curcumin have significant anti-inflammatory effects on acute and subacute foot swelling inflammation in rats and mice. Its decoction has analgesic effect.

Hypolipidemic and antihypertensive

Turmeric alcohol extract, turmeric volatile oil and curcumin all have significant effects on lowering serum cholesterol, triglycerides and β-lipoprotein. Turmeric alcohol extract has a blood pressure lowering effect in anesthetized dogs. Curcumin has the effect of increasing myocardial trophic blood flow. Its volatile oil and curcumin inhibit platelet aggregation. Curcumin has a strong anticoagulant effect by enhancing fiber activity.

Anti-fertility

Its decoction shows excitatory effect on isolated uterus of mice and guinea pigs, and contraction effect on rabbit uterus. Its decoction has a significant terminating effect on all stages of pregnancy and early pregnancy in mice by intraperitoneal injection.

Anti-tumor

Tissue culture and in vivo experiments with murine Dalton's lymphatic ascites tumor cells showed that turmeric alcohol extract could inhibit the growth of cancer cells. It can inhibit the growth of Chinese hamster ovary cells at 0.4mg/ml, and has cytotoxic effect on lymphocytes and Dalton's lymphocytes, and can reduce the growth of animal tumors, and its active ingredient is mainly curcumin.

Light effect

Curcumin is normally weakly bactericidal, but when given light exposure, microgram amounts of curcumin show a strong phototoxic response. Gram-negative bacteria are more resistant to curcumin phototoxicity than Gram-positive. This phototoxicity of curcumin can only be produced in the presence of oxygen. Thus curcumin may be used as a photosensitizing agent in the phototherapy of psoriasis, cancer, bacterial and viral diseases. Curcumin also acts as a stabilizer for drugs that are readily photolyzed. For example, it is particularly photostable to nifedipine, extending its half-life by a factor of 6, which may enhance its efficacy.

Other

Curcumin also has strong antioxidant, antimutagenic and antitumor effects, as well as anti-microbial effects.
