Efficacy and effects of Radix Aconiti

It is the processed product of the roots of Aconitum, a plant of the family Maundicaceae. Aconitum is a medicine that was first published in the Benjing, and is called Aconitum because it grows attached to Aconitum (the mother root). Radix Aconiti is pungent, sweet, very hot and poisonous. It belongs to the heart, kidney and spleen meridians. It has the effect of returning Yang to save the rebellion, tonifying fire to help Yang, dispersing cold and relieving pain.

Returning Yang to save the rebellion

Radix Aconiti can block heart yang, warm spleen yang in the middle and nourish kidney yang in the bottom, so it is the "first medicine to return yang to save rebellion". The Materia Medica Hui Yan says "Anyone who is suffering from yang deficiency and yin extremity, without heat in the lungs and kidneys, can take it to bring back to life." Radix et Rhizoma Pseudostellariae can be used for the treatment of Yang deficiency, Yang weakness, Yin and cold, or the death of Yang due to sweating, vomiting or diarrhea, with cold extremities and a weak pulse that wants to die; it can also be used with ginseng, which is a great tonic for vital energy, to treat the death of Yang and Qi loss; it can also be used for the treatment of cold evil that enters the interior and hits the three yin, with cold extremities, vomiting and diarrhea, abdominal pain, and a sluggish pulse or no pulse.

Tonifying fire to help Yang

To tonify fire is to tonify the fire of the vital gate, which is the vital yang, the kidney yang of the body. It is used for signs of Yang deficiency. It can be used in all cases of wind-cold and damp paralysis with pain in the peripheral bones and joints, and is especially good for treating severe pain in cold paralysis.

Strengthening the heart

Radix et Rhizoma Polygonati enhances myocardial contractility, accelerates heart rate, increases cardiac output, and increases myocardial oxygen consumption.

And Radix et Rhizoma Pseudostellariae should not be used with Chinese herbs such as Radix et Rhizoma, Psidium Guajavae, Phellodendron, Bupleurum and Bletilla. Generally, Radix Aconiti is used externally in its raw form, but internally it needs to be concocted before consumption. If taken in excess or incorrectly concocted or decocted, it can cause poisoning.

Adverse effects of Radix Aconiti

Radix Aconiti contains a variety of aconitine compounds. It has strong toxicity, especially in the heart. The aconitine alkaloids have arrow-like effects, i.e. blocking the conduction of neuromuscular junction, and aconitine-like effects, manifested as heart rate disorders, blood pressure drop, body temperature decrease, respiratory depression, muscle paralysis agent central nervous disorder, etc. Large doses of crude alkaloids of Epimedium can cause systemic and respiratory paralysis symptoms in a variety of animals.

Tips

1. Epiphyllum has a cardiotonic effect, which increases the amplitude of heart contraction, but is easily poisoned by excessive raw use.
