Harvest Season: Fruit Consumption Guidelines for Pregnant Women

December 18, 2023

Autumn is a season of harvest, with a wide variety of fruits available in the market. Pregnant women have certain considerations when consuming these fruits.

After women become pregnant, they may experience pregnancy reactions and have cravings for sour or sweet foods. However, it is important to note that pregnant women should avoid eating hawthorn and hawthorn products. Modern medicine has confirmed that hawthorn has a contraction effect on the uterus. If pregnant women consume a large amount of hawthorn products, it can stimulate uterine contractions and even lead to miscarriage.

Based on the principle of cool medicinal food during pregnancy, pregnant women should avoid eating fruits that generate heat in the body, as these can hinder the nourishment of the fetus. Lychees and longans fall into this category of fruits.

Therefore, pregnant women should pay attention to the following taboos when consuming fruits during pregnancy:

1. Avoid using the same knife for cutting fruits and vegetables.

Using the same knife for cutting raw fish and vegetables can transfer parasites or their eggs to the fruit.

2. Avoid eating fruits immediately after meals.

Eating fruits immediately after a meal can cause bloating and constipation. Therefore, it is recommended to eat fruits within 2 hours after a meal or 1 hour before a meal.

3. Avoid eating excessive amounts of fruits.

Considering fruits as a meal is not scientifically sound. Although fruits are nutritious, their nutrients are not comprehensive, especially in terms of protein and fat, which are essential for the growth and development of the fetus.

4. Avoid not rinsing the mouth after eating fruits.

Some fruits contain various fermentable sugars that can have a strong corrosive effect on teeth. If the mouth is not rinsed after eating fruits, the residue can cause tooth decay.
