Protecting Pregnant Women from Mosquito Bites: The Importance of Green Methods

December 3, 2023

Research has found that pregnant women are bitten by mosquitoes twice as often as non-pregnant women. Experts speculate that women's respiratory volume increases by 21% during pregnancy, and human breath is one of the main reasons mosquitoes are attracted. Since mosquitoes are the main vectors for diseases such as malaria and dengue fever, pregnant women should be more vigilant in preventing mosquito bites. It is not advisable for pregnant women to use chemical mosquito repellents and harmful mosquito coils, as they may have adverse effects on the fetus. Most mosquito coils contain insecticides with pyrethrum as the active ingredient. The smoke from burning mosquito coils contains fine particles and chemicals that are harmful to pregnant women and fetuses. Therefore, experts advocate for pregnant women to prevent mosquito bites using "green methods".

1. Use mosquito nets or screens to keep mosquitoes out. Mosquito nets not only repel mosquitoes but also protect against wind and filter the air, making them especially suitable for pregnant women and children. Screens allow fresh air to enter the room while keeping harmful smoke outside.

2. Place one or two pots of blooming flowers such as night-blooming jasmine, jasmine, gardenia, mint, or roses in the bedroom. Mosquitoes will avoid them because they cannot tolerate their smell.

3. Install orange-red light bulbs in the room, or use translucent orange-red glass paper to cover the bulbs. Mosquitoes will flee from the orange-red light.

4. Place a bottle or cup filled with sugar water or beer in a dark place. When mosquitoes smell the sweet alcohol, they will enter the bottle and get stuck in the liquid, leading to their death.

5. Consume raw garlic, which will produce a scent that mosquitoes dare not approach when it is metabolized by the body and excreted through sweat.

6. Clean up mosquito breeding grounds. Stagnant water and clogged drains are breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Mosquitoes lay eggs in stagnant water, and the larvae hatch quickly. Therefore, removing stagnant water in and around the house can effectively prevent mosquito breeding.

7. Wear light-colored clothing, such as yellow or white. Dark-colored clothing is more prone to mosquito bites, such as dark blue, brown, or black.

8. Take frequent showers to reduce body odor, making it less attractive to mosquitoes.

9. Spray floral water on the collar, cuffs, and other areas to prevent mosquito bites.
