Managing Childhood Enuresis: Dietary Therapies for Improvement

February 21, 2024

What to do about childhood enuresis

Children over the age of 5 often unknowingly urinate during sleep, a condition known as enuresis. In mild cases, it may happen every few nights, while in severe cases, it can occur once or multiple times every night. Enuresis often happens during deep sleep and the child can continue sleeping after urinating. With age, most children can recover on their own, but in some cases, it may continue for several years or even into adulthood. Prolonged enuresis can lead to pale or dull complexion, memory decline, mental fatigue, and physical exhaustion. Children with enuresis often have frequent and long urination, cold limbs, some may feel thirsty and like to drink water. Apart from a few cases caused by organic diseases such as cystitis, phimosis, pinworm infection, spinal bifida, or other spinal cord lesions, the majority of enuresis cases are due to dysfunction of the cerebral cortex and subcortical centers. Some children may develop enuresis due to prolonged daytime fatigue, frequent scolding from parents, excessive mental stress, or drinking a large amount of water in the evening.

In addition to active treatment by medical professionals, the following dietary therapy can help with childhood enuresis:

1. Take 500 grams of pork and 100 grams of black soybeans, cook them until soft and consume.

2. Take 1 chicken intestine, open and wash it, dry and grind it into powder. Take 5-10 grams of the powder twice a day and drink it with warm water.

3. Take 40 grams of raw dragon bone and add an appropriate amount of water, simmer for 30-45 minutes. Then cook 2 lotus eggs (for children over 7 years old) in the dragon bone broth and eat the eggs with the broth before bedtime (sugar or seasoning can be added). Add another dose of dragon bone to the residue and simmer again, continue this treatment for 1-2 weeks.

4. Eat 10 lychees every day, continue for half a month.

5. Take 2 spoons of maltose and mix it with a decoction made from 5 grams of cinnamon twigs, 10 grams each of white peony and licorice. Drink it warm.

6. Take 1 pig pancreas, prick it with several jujube thorns and add a little salt. Steam the pig pancreas until cooked and eat it.

7. Take 12 grams of ginkgo nuts, 12 grams of raspberry, 12 grams of cherry plum, 6 grams of schisandra, 9 grams of lotus root whiskers, 9 grams of eucommia bark, 12 grams of Chinese yam, 12 grams of codonopsis root, and 6 grams of mulberry parasitic. Boil with water 3 times a day and drink in the morning, noon, and evening. Generally, 3-5 doses are effective.

8. Before going to bed, eat 3-5 pieces of walnut kernel and drink 60 grams of warm rice wine. Continue this for 1 month, and enuresis will improve.
