Is your child experiencing a decline in memory? It could be related to the air quality during this period. A recent study published in the Journal of Public Health and Medicine in the United States revealed that children in areas with severe air pollution have slower cognitive development.

Researchers from the Spanish Center for Environmental Epidemiology conducted a survey on 2,715 students aged 7 to 10 from 39 primary schools in Barcelona.

During the 12-month survey period, the participants measured the working memory, executive function, and attention of the children, and compared these results with the level of air pollution in their schools.

The results showed that students in schools with severe air pollution had slower cognitive development. This result was not affected by other relevant factors.

The researchers stated that these findings suggest that air pollution has a lasting impact on the brain development of children, significantly affecting their learning abilities. This highlights the need for government agencies to avoid selecting school locations in areas with severe air pollution.

For parents, in areas with heavy air pollution, it is advisable to use air purifiers at home and take necessary precautions when children go outside in polluted weather, or even minimize outdoor activities.
