The Impact of a Mother's Mood on Breastfeeding: Maintaining a Happy and Joyful Daily Life

February 12, 2024

Some new mothers may experience mood swings after childbirth, leading to feelings of sadness and a constant bad mood. Some new parents may wonder: Does a mother's bad mood affect the baby's feeding?

    The answer is yes.

Any emotion of a new mother, such as worry, surprise, irritability, and sadness, can affect the activity of the pituitary gland through the cerebral cortex, thereby inhibiting the secretion of prolactin and causing a lack of breast milk. Moreover, it can also lead to liver depression and blood stasis, resulting in a small amount of milk or even a change in color.

The severe mood swings of a new mother greatly affect the quality and quantity of breast milk. Babies who drink such milk may be unhealthy, experiencing increased heart rate, irritability, poor sleep at night, and being fussy.

Therefore, new mothers during breastfeeding should try to avoid emotional fluctuations and excessive fatigue, and maintain a cheerful mood and sufficient sleep. Consciously listening to music, reading good books, doing aerobic exercise, and other activities can help regulate emotions and maintain a passionate attitude towards life, leading to a happy and joyful daily life.

In addition, family members should provide more care and support to help new mothers maintain a positive mindset.
