The hospital is probably the last place a baby wants to go, and taking medicine is probably the last thing they want to do. It is difficult for anyone to give medicine to young infants. How can we make sure that the baby doesn't cough and successfully take the medication?
1. Before taking medication, parents should not feed the sick child milk or water, so that the child is in a semi-hungry state. This can prevent nausea and vomiting, and also make it easier for the child to swallow the medication.
2. According to the doctor's instructions, place the pill or liquid medication in a spoon and mix it with warm water. You can also add a little sugar. When giving the medication, hold the child in your arms and raise their head to a semi-reclining position. Gently press the child's cheeks with your thumb and index finger to make them open their mouth, and then slowly pour the medication into their mouth. However, be careful not to use the method of pinching the child's nose to make them open their mouth, and do not directly pour the medication into the throat to avoid choking and even aspiration pneumonia.
3. After giving the medication, continue to feed the child 20-30 milliliters of water to send any medication remaining in the mouth and esophagus into the stomach. Also, do not feed the child milk immediately after giving the medication to avoid reflux and vomiting.
4. It is important to strictly follow the prescribed dosage. The detoxification function of organs such as the liver and kidneys in newborns is not yet fully developed, so overdosing can easily lead to poisoning.
5. Sometimes the dosage for young children is very small. In order to accurately measure the dosage and reduce the loss of active ingredients during medication, you can crush and mix the medication with calcium tablets or other medications that have no significant effect on the body, and then separate the dosage to be taken.
