January 17, 2024

Oral ulcers are a common oral mucosal disease. Most of them occur in the tongue, cheeks, and other inner sides. Summer is a common time for children to develop this oral disease. Oral ulcers can cause pain and discomfort in children, leading to a loss of appetite. Therefore, parents must pay attention to this issue. Today, I would like to talk to you about the types of oral ulcers in children, the causes of oral ulcers in babies, and some home remedies for treating oral ulcers.

Types of Oral Ulcers in Children

Oral ulcers can be categorized into herpetic gingivostomatitis and simple oral ulcers. If parents notice that their child, who usually has a good appetite, suddenly loses interest in eating or shows unnatural facial expressions during meals, or even complains of mouth pain, it is recommended to take the child to the hospital for a dental examination. The doctor can determine if the child has herpetic gingivostomatitis or simple oral ulcers.

Causes of Oral Ulcers in Babies

  1. Hand, foot, and mouth disease: This disease has symptoms similar to herpetic gingivostomatitis. It is common in children under 5 years old and is highly contagious. After being infected, the mouth is covered with small blisters that easily rupture, forming multiple small ulcers. In addition to the mouth, small blisters may also appear on the palms, soles of the feet, and buttocks, hence the name "hand, foot, and mouth disease."

  2. Canker sores: This is a common condition with various causes. Some canker sores are caused by minor injuries to the oral mucosa, while others are caused by excessive stress or a deficiency of vitamin B in the diet. In the early stages, the oral mucosa may feel a burning sensation, followed by redness and the formation of many small ulcers, which can be quite painful. Common sites include the lateral mucosa of the tongue, the bottom of the mouth, and the back of the tongue.

  3. Trauma: Any burns, puncture wounds, or ingestion of corrosive substances can cause injury to the oral mucosa, leading to ulcers.

  4. Medication allergies: Babies with special constitutions may develop a condition called "erythema multiforme" due to medication or unknown infections. This condition is characterized by target-shaped rashes on the body, inflammation and ulceration in the eyes, lips, mouth, and genital urinary tract.

Home Remedies for Treating Oral Ulcers in Babies

  1. Take fresh banana leaves and heat them over a fire. Apply them to the site of the oral ulcer 2-3 times a day.

  2. Scrape off the persimmon frost from dried persimmons and dissolve it in hot water or add it to porridge to consume.

  3. Squeeze the juice from watermelon and hold it in the mouth for about 2-3 minutes before swallowing. Repeat this several times a day.

  4. Crush 1-2 vitamin C tablets and sprinkle them on the ulcer. Have the baby close their mouth for a moment. Repeat this twice a day.

  5. Mix 1 tablespoon of full-fat powdered milk with a little sugar and dissolve it in hot water. Consume this 2-3 times a day, with the best effect being before bedtime. Usually, the ulcer will disappear after 2 days.

  6. Beat an egg in a bowl to make a paste. Soak a suitable amount of mung beans in cold water for more than 10 minutes. Boil them on a stove for about 2 minutes (do not overcook). Use the mung bean water to make a drink with the beaten egg. Consume this once in the morning and once in the evening.

  7. Squeeze the juice from a tomato and hold it in the mouth for several minutes. Repeat this multiple times a day.
