Understanding Autism: Characteristics and Prevention Methods

January 4, 2024

Autism is a developmental disorder caused by innate brain dysfunction, which is usually discovered before the age of three. What are the characteristics of autism patients? What are the prevention methods? Let me tell you!

Three Characteristics of Autism Patients

1. Language Disorders

About 70% of children with autism have language disorders. In severe cases, they may never want to speak or have limited vocabulary. Even if they can speak, they are unlikely to engage in communication with others. If they do speak, they may simply imitate others instead of expressing themselves.

2. Lack of Imitation

Generally, children develop the ability to imitate from the age of six months. They imitate people and things around them. However, children with autism do not imitate others and their gaze may appear vacant.

3. Social Impairments

Social impairments are very evident in children with autism. They do not show interest in people or events around them, often exhibit anti-social behavior, and do not express their own feelings. They tend to focus on one thing and can engage in a boring game for a long time. They also develop habits, such as sitting in a specific place to look at something or constantly eating a specific dish, without sharing with others.

Prevention Methods for Autism

1. Understand Your Child

Understand the basic growth and development patterns of children, such as physical growth, neuro-psychological development, and behavioral development.

Parents can read popular science books on childcare to gain knowledge about when children start teething, walking, speaking, and how to deal with shyness, etc.

2. Pay Attention to Your Child

Not only should you pay attention to your child's height, weight, nutrition, and regular physical check-ups, but also pay attention to their perception, language, activities, emotions, behaviors, and social interactions. It is important to moderate your attention to your child's emotional needs.

Especially if there is a family history of similar diseases, mental illness, or brain damage during or after birth, it is important to closely observe the child's development and behavioral performance.

3. Involve Your Child in Group Activities

Many parents are too busy with work to allow their children to participate in group activities. However, if you want to prevent autism, you must let your child participate in group activities. Through group activities, you can cultivate your child's character and make them more outgoing, thus preventing the occurrence of autism.
