Preventing and Relieving Moisture and Heat Symptoms in Babies

January 2, 2024

After autumn, the weather gradually becomes cooler. Moisture, which has long plagued people, is still a factor that affects our health. Especially for babies, how can we prevent them from being bothered by moisture? What are the common symptoms of moisture and heat in babies?

Common Symptoms of Moisture and Heat in Babies

1. Prickly Heat

According to traditional Chinese medicine, prickly heat is related to dampness and heat. When there is excessive dampness, sweat cannot be discharged smoothly, and when there is excessive heat, the skin becomes red, swollen, itchy, and painful.

Therefore, prickly heat is mostly caused by poor sweat discharge due to external humidity after being heated, as well as the accumulation of heat toxins in the skin.

2. Eczema

Eating spicy food, seafood, and other triggering factors often lead to eczema outbreaks, and eczema is more likely to recur in the summer with a heavier damp and heat.

In the affected areas, eczema is commonly found in the joints of the limbs, such as the elbow and knee creases. It is extremely itchy and can even cause skin lesions, redness, and oozing. Over time, the skin lesions can thicken and the affected skin becomes rough.

3. Poor Appetite

Poor appetite means a decrease in food intake and a lack of appetite.

Excessive dampness can affect the digestive function of the spleen and stomach, resulting in thick and greasy tongue coating, poor appetite, bloating, loose or sticky stools, and in severe cases, vomiting and diarrhea may occur.

How to Relieve Symptoms of Moisture and Heat

1. Prickly Heat

To relieve prickly heat, we need to use methods that can clear dampness and heat.

For mild cases of prickly heat, you can cook some mung bean soup and drink it instead of water. It can clear heat, promote urination, and detoxify the body.

But for severe cases with widespread and bright red skin lesions, you can add 10 grams of honeysuckle flowers to enhance the heat-clearing and detoxifying effects.

Just be careful not to cook the mung beans for too long. Generally, after the water boils, cook for another 5 minutes on high heat. If the mung beans are cooked for too long, their heat-clearing and heat-relieving effects will be reduced.

2. Eczema

To relieve eczema, you can make a soup with mung beans, honeysuckle flowers, coix seeds (30 grams), and adzuki beans (15 grams). Soak them in cold water for half an hour, then simmer them on low heat for 20 minutes after the water boils. Drink the soup instead of water to achieve the effects of clearing heat, promoting urination, detoxifying the body, and relieving itching.

3. Poor Appetite

To improve poor appetite, you can brew a tea using 6 grams of dried tangerine peel, 3 grams of lotus leaves, and 6 grams of barley tea. This tea can clear heat, promote digestion, and effectively stimulate the appetite.
