Relieving Allergic Rhinitis in Children: Traditional Chinese Medicine Remedies and Treatment Methods

December 25, 2023

Children have low immunity and are prone to various bacterial infections. Allergic rhinitis undoubtedly makes things worse. When children are uncomfortable, adults are also worried. So, what methods can be used to relieve it? Traditional Chinese medicine has effective remedies for rhinitis, as follows:

Symptoms of allergic rhinitis in children

1. Itchy nose

Children tend to rub their noses inadvertently.

2. Sneezing, runny nose

Sudden and severe sneezing, accompanied by runny nose, with clear nasal discharge.

3. Nasal congestion

Children consciously exert force when exhaling, feeling the need to expel something from their noses.

4. Redness around the eyes

Due to nasal infection, the nerves around the eyes are affected to a certain extent, so children often rub their eyes, causing redness.

5. Sore throat

Children may increase their water intake frequency and become less talkative.

6. Decreased sense of smell

The nasal passages are blocked, causing a decrease in olfactory sensitivity.

7. Irritability in children

Dizziness and headache prevent children from playing, so they often sit still and have poor spirits.

Treatment methods of rhinitis in traditional Chinese medicine

1. Cold water treatment for rhinitis

Wash the face with cold water and cup your hands with cold water from the faucet, hold it against the nose, inhale the cold water into the nasal cavity, and then exhale it. Repeat several times and do it every day.

2. Saltwater nasal irrigation for rhinitis

Prepare saltwater (put two spoons of table salt in 100ml of boiling water), use a toothpick to dip a cotton ball in the saltwater and wash the nasal cavity, then leave the cotton ball in the nasal cavity. At this time, tilt the head back or lie flat, press the sides of the nose with the index finger and thumb, and suck forcefully to allow the saltwater soaked in the cotton ball to flow into the nasal cavity and then into the throat. At first, it may feel spicy and unbearable in the nose, but after a few times, the body will adapt. You can also start with a diluted saltwater solution and gradually increase the concentration to allow the nasal cavity to slowly adapt.

3. Honey locust honey for rhinitis

When washing the face in the morning and evening, use the little finger to dip flowing tap water into the nasal cavity to clean it, remove scabs and secretions from the nasal cavity, fully expose the nasal mucosa, and then apply commercially available honey locust honey evenly to the affected area of the nasal cavity using a cotton swab or finger.

4. Garlic for rhinitis

Mash a clove of garlic, wrap it in a clean cloth, and squeeze out two drops of garlic juice into each nostril (it will be very painful at the time). Then press the nose with your hand a few times to make the garlic juice stick to the nasal cavity. Do it once for mild symptoms, and twice for severe symptoms (garlic is highly irritating, so start with a small amount; it is forbidden for people allergic to garlic).

5. Eye socket massage for rhinitis

Use the index fingers of both hands to press on the shallow pit on the lower edge of the eye socket, and rub it up and down for about two hundred times, at least twice a day, and continue for a period of time to take effect.

For folk remedies for rhinitis, they are not suitable for everyone, so it is important to find the cause of rhinitis in a timely manner in order to solve the problem fundamentally.

Reminder: Develop the correct method of blowing your nose. Most people are used to using handkerchiefs or tissues to pinch both nostrils of their children to blow their noses. This can cause nasal mucus to flow back into the sinuses, leading to bacterial infection and sinusitis. The correct method is to block one nostril at a time and blow the mucus out one by one.
