Unconscious Reflex Movements in Newborn Babies: A Peek into Brain Development

December 13, 2023

Newborn babies have various reflex movements, these movements have nothing to do with the brain, they are unconscious movements caused by stimuli from inside and outside the body, and they will gradually disappear as the brain develops. The main reflex movements are:

    Grasping reflex

This is one of the criteria for measuring the normal development of a baby's brain. When the baby is asleep, suddenly lift the blanket covering the baby's body, the baby will be startled and raise both hands vigorously; or blow air on the baby's face while the baby is asleep, the baby will have the same reaction, this reaction is called the grasping reflex.

When performing this reflex, if the baby only raises the left hand and does not raise the right hand, or only raises the right hand and does not raise the left hand, it indicates that the development of the contralateral half of the brain that does not raise the hand may not be normal. If there is no reaction at all, it indicates abnormal brain development or intracranial hemorrhage. At this time, it is necessary to take the baby to the hospital for examination.

    Grasping reflex

The baby wants to grab anything as long as it touches their hands. In addition, if you touch the soles of the baby's feet with your fingers, the baby's small feet will produce twitching or reflexes of shrinking inward.

    Sucking reflex

When you touch the baby's mouth or cheek with your finger, the baby's mouth will move forcefully in the direction of the finger and show signs of wanting to breastfeed.
