Understanding the Link Between Excessive Warmth and Childhood Colds

November 28, 2023

Why are infants and young children prone to catching colds? One reason is that they have a weaker immune system due to their young age. However, there are also other factors that contribute, such as excessive warmth.

Doctors have observed that as the weather gets colder, adults typically wear two layers of clothing. However, some young parents tend to overprotect their small children from the cold by dressing them in four or five layers, including padded jackets and down coats. This excessive warmth can actually backfire and make children more susceptible to catching colds. Young children are naturally active and have a faster metabolism, which causes them to sweat more. If the sweat cools down on the skin, it can easily lead to catching a chill. Therefore, parents should adjust their children's clothing according to the changes in weather, rather than thinking that more and thicker layers of clothing will provide better protection. Experts advise that in the current weather, children should wear slightly thicker clothing than adults.
