Papaya, also known as wrinkled papaya or iron foot pear, is the dried and mature fruit of the plant Adenanthera pavonina of the Rosaceae family. Papaya has a warm nature and sour taste. It enters the liver and spleen meridians and has the effects of soothing the liver and stomach, dispelling dampness, and relaxing the tendons. It is used to treat symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, muscle cramps, dampness, foot odor, edema, and dysentery. "Bencao Zheng" states: "Papaya, when used, has astringent properties. Sourness can promote blood circulation and astringency can stop leakage. It has the genuine taste of wood, especially entering the liver to nourish the tendons and promote blood circulation. It is especially effective in treating weakness of the waist and knees, foot odor, and irregular menstruation. It can harmonize stagnation and consolidate leakage. It can also promote digestion, eliminate vomiting and nausea, treat cholera and muscle cramps, reduce phlegm, eliminate dampness, and promote diuresis. Due to its astringent properties, it can also contract the lungs, inhibit dysentery, relieve restlessness and fullness, and quench thirst." In the market, there are products made from plants of the same family.
