Lilu, also known as shancong and pear luh, is the root and rhizome of the plant black lilu in the lily family. It is harvested in May-June before the flowering stem emerges, and the seedlings are removed. It is dried in the sun or soaked in boiling water and then dried for medicinal use. Lilu has a cold nature, bitter and pungent taste, and is toxic. It enters the liver meridian and has the effects of dispelling wind-phlegm and killing parasites. It is used to treat symptoms such as wind-phlegm surging, epilepsy, jaundice, chronic malaria, diarrhea, headache, throat bi, scabies, and ulcers. "Bencao Jing Shu" states: "Lilu, 'Ben Jing' treats gu poison and coughing, and 'Bie Lu' treats hiccup and throat bi obstruction. It has the ability to disperse stagnation and congestion. Bitterness can induce vomiting, so it can expel pathogenic qi and phlegm heat from the chest and diaphragm. Pungency can disperse masses, so it is used to treat nasal polyps. Bitterness can also relieve heat and kill parasites, so it is used to treat diarrhea and intestinal parasites."
