The Therapeutic Benefits of Scraping Therapy: A Traditional Chinese Treatment Method

February 20, 2024

The treatment method of scraping therapy involves using a smooth-edged spoon, coin, or hard object to scrape the patient's body in a sequential manner. Scraping therapy is a popular treatment method among the Chinese population. After scraping, patients often feel a local or overall sense of relaxation, comfort, and relief of symptoms. The method is as follows:

1. The patient should assume a comfortable position, fully exposing the treatment area, and wash the area with warm water.

2. Dip a smooth-edged spoon (or tablespoon, coin, etc.) into sesame oil (or other types of oil such as rapeseed oil, peanut oil, or water), and scrape the desired area repeatedly in one direction.

3. The scraping motion is generally from top to bottom, or from the middle of the body towards the sides, or always from the inside to the outside. Avoid scraping back and forth. Approximately 20 scrapes should be done in each area until the skin shows deep red stripes.

4. The scraping area is usually limited to the patient's back or the sides of the neck. Depending on the condition, scraping can also be done on the sides of the neck in front of the throat, the sides of the chest, the sides of the spine, the inside of the elbows, or the inside of the knees. The scraping area can be chosen according to the needs of the condition.

5. Each area can have 2 to 4 or 4 to 8 "blood marks." The shape of the "blood marks" can be straight or curved, depending on the area. After scraping, lightly pat the scraped area with diluted saline solution.

6. Using a smaller scraping tool, treatment can be applied to acupuncture points. Commonly used acupuncture points include Zusanli, Tian Tu, Qu Chi, and some points on the back. Scaping therapy on acupuncture points not only has the therapeutic effect of scraping itself but also helps to unblock meridians and promote blood circulation. This method is suitable for abdominal pain, restlessness, gastrointestinal colds, nausea caused by heatstroke, and muscle or general body soreness caused by scraping.

The following conditions are not suitable for scraping therapy:

1. People with excessively thin bodies or loss of skin elasticity.

2. Patients with heart disease.

3. Patients with edema.

4. Patients with hemophilia or those prone to bleeding.

5. Children and elderly individuals who are physically weak.
