Guidelines for Safe and Effective Scraping Techniques in Traditional Chinese Medicine

December 14, 2023

1. To understand the condition, diagnose and treat the disease, investigate the cause, and determine the area for scraping.

2. Use appropriate techniques based on the patient's condition, such as deficiency or excess, cold or heat, superficial or deep, and yin or yang.

3. For pregnant women, avoid scraping the abdomen, waist, and sacral region. Avoid scraping the nipples of women.

4. Do not scrape the fontanelle of infants that has not closed.

5. Do not scrape areas with infected sores, ulcers, scars, or tumors.

6. For individuals with varicose veins in the lower limbs, use gentle techniques from bottom to top.

7. Be cautious when scraping individuals with low platelet count (prone to excessive bleeding) or those in critical condition.

8. Avoid facing an electric fan while scraping and try to avoid strong drafts.

9. Do not use substitute tools for scraping, such as coins, plastic crystals, ceramics, or camphor oil.

10. For the head and face, there is no need to apply oil. For general health scraping, you can scrape over clothing. For therapeutic scraping, specialized scraping oil must be used.

11. After each scraping session, it is necessary to wait until the sha (red marks) have subsided before scraping the same area again. Light scraping can be done regularly to promote microcirculation and enhance the effect of sha reduction.

12. During scraping, there may be slight bleeding from capillaries, which will be absorbed by surrounding tissues. This is a normal process that increases resistance.

13. For those who are afraid of pain, soaking in hot water or applying heat before scraping can help reduce pain.

14. After scraping, the sweat pores will be dilated. Avoid taking a cold shower within half an hour and avoid exposure to cold wind. It is acceptable to take a warm shower or continue scraping during the shower.

15. After scraping, drink a glass of warm water to replenish the body's fluid, promote metabolism, and accelerate detoxification.

16. Scraping does not necessarily have to produce sha. The presence of sha indicates the presence of toxins in the body. If the body is healthy, even with vigorous scraping, sha may not appear. Conversely, even with gentle techniques, sha may still be evident.

17. For general health scraping, there is no need to apply oil or produce sha. Gently scrape each part of the body, following the sequence of meridians, for 3-10 minutes each day. This will naturally achieve the benefits of strengthening the body and promoting longevity.
