Scraping is not suitable for everyone and there are many contraindications. The following individuals and those experiencing the following conditions should not undergo scraping.
● Avoid scraping when full, on an empty stomach, or when excessively fatigued.
● Individuals who are physically weak and have lost skin elasticity.
● Avoid scraping the triangular area between the eyebrows and mouth, as breaking the skin in this area can easily lead to infection spreading to the brain.
● Avoid scraping in areas with abundant blood vessels and nerves, such as the ventral surface of the neck, or areas with little subcutaneous tissue and close proximity between muscles and bones, such as the clavicle and tibia. Improper technique or excessive force may result in superficial nerve or microvascular damage.
● Pregnant women should not have their abdominal and lumbosacral areas scraped, and women should avoid scraping the nipples.
● Patients with leukemia, thrombocytopenia, bleeding disorders, and other bleeding diseases.
● Patients with heart disease, renal failure, ascites due to liver cirrhosis, severe systemic edema, and bone injuries should avoid scraping.
● Do not directly scrape over skin lesions or inflamed areas.
● Excessive force during scraping may cause rupture of atherosclerotic plaques in the blood vessels of elderly individuals, leading to stroke.
Some individuals should use alternative scraping methods
● Diabetic patients should avoid using the purgative scraping method and should use gentle scraping. If there are skin lesions, scraping should be avoided.
● Patients with low blood pressure, low blood sugar, excessive weakness, and extreme sensitivity to pain should be gently scraped.
● For lower limb varicose veins, scraping should be applied from bottom to top or evenly distributed.
Precautions for scraping
● Do not use alternative tools for scraping, such as coins or plastic items.
● After scraping, keep the area clean to avoid skin infections caused by broken skin.
● Do not scrape for too long. Avoid scraping large areas continuously to protect the body's qi (vital energy).
● For febrile diseases, start by scraping the Dazhui acupoint (GV14) before scraping other uncomfortable areas.
