Identifying the Different Types of Plums and Nectarines

October 31, 2023
"Guo Zhen Li Nai. Cai Zhong Jie Jiang," is a Chinese saying that means plums and nectarines are the most precious fruits. The summer and autumn seasons are the prime time for plums to ripen. However, due to the wide variety of plum species, it is often difficult to identify them. For example, is a black brum plum a type of plum?

Black Brum Plum is a Type of Plum

Black Brum Plum, also known as black plum, black brown, black nai li, etc., is a variety imported from the United States. The fruit is purple-black in color, also known as American black plum or American plum. The skin of the black brum plum is purple-black, the flesh is yellow, thick and juicy, and the skin has a slightly sour taste. It is a type of plum.

Varieties of Plums

Black Brum Plum

The American black plum (also known as Brum Black Plum or Black Brum Brown Plum) is a new high-end fruit variety developed by American researchers through decades of efforts in crossbreeding Chinese and European plums.

It has overcome the shortcomings of Chinese plums, such as easy cracking, strong astringency, indigestibility, and monotonous color. With its unique shape, vibrant color, sweet and fragrant taste, and relatively long storage life, it is highly favored by consumers.

San Hua Plum

San Hua Plum, also known as Big Honey Plum, Chicken Ma Plum, or Shan Hua Plum, is a famous and characteristic fruit in Guangdong Province. San Hua Town in Wengyuan County, Shaoguan City, Guangdong, is the original place of San Hua Plum. The skin of San Hua Plum is red, and the flesh can be red or yellow depending on the lighting conditions. The fruit is large, fleshy, crispy, and sweet and sour.

Green Plum

Green Plum, also known as Green Crispy Plum, is green in color before it ripens and slightly greenish-yellow when ripe. The flesh is crispy, and the pit separates easily from the flesh. It is sweet and sour and delicious. Green plums are best eaten when they have a greenish-yellow skin. If they are left to ripen until the skin turns yellow or red, they become sweeter but lose their texture.

Queen "Goddess"

This is a newly introduced variety. The fruit has an elongated oval shape, with dark blue-black skin and yellow flesh. It is known as the "Oat Fruit" and weighs around 125 grams, with some fruits weighing up to 200 grams. It has a high sugar content and, when ripe, has a fragrance similar to pineapple and persimmon. It is suitable for storage and transportation and has good productivity. It ripens in late September and has great development potential.

Varieties of Nectarines

Golden Nai Li

Golden Nai Li is a special variety of nectarine that undergoes organic bagging treatment during its growth process. This treatment preserves the rich flavor of the nectarine while turning the mature fruit's skin golden yellow, hence the name "Golden Nai Li." The flesh of the Golden Nai Li is thick, juicy, sweet and sour, with a hint of honey fragrance. It combines the sweetness of plums, the fragrance of apricots, and the texture of peaches.

You Nai

You Nai, also known as Nai Li, Qing Bu Lin, is a variant of nectarine. The fruit is heart-shaped like a peach, with a relatively large size, thin skin, yellow skin, yellow flesh, small pit, thick and crispy flesh, and a strong and sweet aroma.
