The Dangers of Consuming Overnight Beer: Taste Changes, Bacterial Growth, and Diarrhea

October 31, 2023
Beer is one of the oldest alcoholic beverages consumed by humans, ranking third in worldwide consumption after water and tea. It is often referred to as the "liquid bread" due to its low alcohol content, rich nutrients, and potential health benefits when consumed in moderation. However, can beer that has been opened and left overnight still be consumed?

Beer that has been left overnight should not be consumed

The enjoyment of beer lies in its quick consumption rather than savoring it slowly. Unlike spirits, beer does not have a lingering taste that is suitable for slow sipping. Additionally, the refreshing taste of beer can only be fully experienced when consumed quickly. Beer that has been opened for too long will undergo significant changes in taste, let alone beer that has been left overnight. Moreover, overnight beer is prone to bacterial growth, which can lead to sedimentation and make it unsuitable for consumption.

Overnight beer has an unpleasant taste

The pleasure of drinking beer comes from its refreshing sensation, which is provided by the carbon dioxide in beer. When freshly poured into a glass, carbon dioxide rises from the beer, forming a unique foam. Drinking it at this stage gives a refreshing and stimulating feeling. However, if a bottle of beer is left open for too long, the carbon dioxide will slowly dissipate, resulting in reduced foam. The flavor and taste of the beer will change, becoming bland and less enjoyable.

Drinking overnight beer can cause diarrhea

Beer is rich in nutrients, and if not consumed promptly after opening, it can become a breeding ground for bacteria, especially in warm weather. After just a few hours at room temperature, beer can change color and even develop sediment. This indicates the decomposition of nutrients by bacteria and the abundant growth of bacteria within the beer. Drinking such beer can easily lead to severe diarrhea.

Tips for drinking beer

Do not drink beer excessively

Beer has a lower alcohol content, and due to its refreshing taste, it is easy to drink in large quantities. However, excessive consumption can damage liver function, increase the burden on the kidneys, and cause infiltration of fat cells in cardiac tissue, leading to weakened myocardial function and tachycardia. Excessive liquid intake can also increase the volume of blood circulation, burdening the heart and causing myocardial hypertrophy and ventricular enlargement, known as "beer heart." Over time, this can lead to heart failure and arrhythmias.

Drinking beer can lead to obesity

Beer is rich in nutrients and high in calories. Long-term excessive consumption can result in the accumulation of body fat, leading to a protruding abdomen, commonly known as a "beer belly," as well as obesity, elevated blood lipids, and high blood pressure.

Appropriate temperature for beer

The ideal temperature for beer consumption is around 8-10 degrees Celsius. Freezing beer is not only unpleasant to drink but can also degrade its nutritional content and cause protein breakdown and release in the liquid. On the other hand, beer should not be too hot, as high temperatures can lead to beer explosions. Drinking beer at high temperatures also accelerates the loss of carbon dioxide, affecting its taste.
