Preserving and Utilizing Leftover Lemons: Tips and Tricks

October 28, 2023

Drinking lemon water not only allows you to enjoy the nutritional benefits and flavor of lemons, but also cleverly avoids the sourness of lemons. One lemon can be used to infuse a large glass of water, and it can be used to infuse water about 3 times. However, it is impossible to use up a lemon once it is cut. So, how to store a cut lemon?

Honey preservation

Apply some honey to the cut surface of the lemon to retain moisture. After wrapping it with plastic wrap, it can be stored in a fresh-keeping container for two to three days. Honey has the effect of preserving and preventing decay. Alternatively, you can spread a layer of honey on a plate, place the lemon upside down on it, and cover the entire plate with plastic wrap. Then, put it in the refrigerator. This way, the lemon can be stored for 3-4 days. When you need to use it, just cut a slice.

Honey marinade

Slice the leftover lemon and soak it in honey or soak it in rock sugar and white sugar. This marinated lemon can be used for making lemon water in the future. However, make sure it is free of water, otherwise it may become rotten. Store the marinated lemon slices in a dry container, seal it, and put it in the refrigerator. It can be stored for one month.

Plastic wrap storage

Seal the cut surface of the lemon with plastic wrap and refrigerate it. It can be stored for 2-3 days. Remember to store it in the refrigerator, not the freezer. It can be stored for a short time, but if stored for a long time, it may become moldy and spoiled.

How long can an uncut lemon be stored?

Lemons have good storage characteristics, which is why Dr. Lind recommended sailors to carry lemons on ships to supplement vitamin C and prevent scurvy. The main problem with long-term storage of lemons is that the surface may become dry. However, even when it dries, it can still be used as the inside remains juicy. It can be stored for up to a month.

Creative uses for leftover lemons

Fresh lemons are the best for making lemon water. Although cut lemons can be stored in the refrigerator for a few days, there may still be leftovers. In this case, you can place these lemons in corners of your house to freshen the air. Furthermore, lemons have excellent cleaning properties and can be used to remove scale from pots, clean sinks, and eliminate odors.
