How to Properly Wash and Care for Your Comforter

October 25, 2023

A comforter is a large item, unlike clothes that are lightweight. Washing a comforter requires careful attention, as different types of comforters have different cleaning methods. Below, we will tell you how to wash a comforter.

How to Wash a Duvet Cover

Washing a duvet cover can be laborious. Soak the duvet cover in water and then drain the excess water from the basin. Apply soap to the duvet cover, gently rub, and place it in a transparent plastic bag. Seal the bag and leave it in direct sunlight for 3 hours before washing. This method is suitable for light-colored duvet covers. Dark-colored or patterned duvet covers may fade, so this method is not suitable for them. For duvet covers that are prone to fading, soak them separately in a basin with detergent for cleaning.

How to Wash a Cotton Comforter

When washing a cotton comforter, it is necessary to separate the comforter filling from the outer fabric for cleaning. The outer fabric can be machine washed or hand washed. However, the cotton filling is not suitable for water washing. To keep it clean, it is recommended to air it out frequently. Cotton comforters are difficult to dry after washing, and the cotton fibers may become loose, resulting in reduced insulation.

How to Wash a Fiberfill Comforter

Fiberfill comforters are suitable for water washing. Avoid using laundry detergent to rub the comforter. Instead, choose a mild detergent and wash for no more than 30 minutes. After washing, thoroughly dry the comforter to prevent mold or insect infestation.

How to Wash a Silk Comforter

It is best to dry clean a silk comforter. If you need to wash it with water, use a specialized silk detergent as silk is not suitable for strong stain removers. After washing, hang it in a well-ventilated area to dry.

How to Wash a Wool Comforter

Wool comforters have excellent elasticity, moisture absorption, and warmth. They should not be washed with water and are only suitable for dry cleaning. After cleaning, hang the comforter in a well-ventilated area for half an hour to an hour to achieve the effect of sterilization and moisture removal.

How to Wash a Down Comforter

In general, a comforter core does not need to be washed frequently. Cleaning once every two to three years is sufficient. It can be washed with water or sent to a dry cleaner. When washing at home, use a small amount of neutral detergent and thoroughly rinse to avoid leaving any traces of detergent. After washing, place it in a shaded and well-ventilated area to dry completely.

Drying and Disinfecting a Comforter

The primary method of disinfecting a comforter is sun exposure. The ultraviolet rays in sunlight have a strong bactericidal effect. In general, exposing the comforter to direct sunlight for 3-6 hours can eliminate most bacteria. It is not necessary to expose the comforter for too long. Usually, from 10 am to 2 pm is sufficient.
