Restoring Hearing Loss: Traditional Chinese Medicine Approaches

October 18, 2023

There are many reasons for hearing loss, which may be due to excessive stress, noise exposure, or disease. What can we do to help restore hearing loss? The following methods may be worth a try.

Hearing Loss Caused by Excessive Liver Fire

Traditional Chinese medicine believes that the liver and gallbladder are closely related, and the gallbladder meridian runs through the ears. Excessive liver fire can cause Qi and fire to rise to the ears, resulting in symptoms such as tinnitus and hearing loss.

Signs of excessive liver fire include: headache, dizziness, red face and ears, irritability, insomnia and vivid dreaming, sore lower back and knees, feeling of heaviness in the head and lightness in the feet, and so on.

Chrysanthemum Tea

Chrysanthemum tea has a good effect in clearing liver fire, effectively helping to improve hearing loss caused by excessive liver fire.

Method: After washing 5-6 chrysanthemum flowers, put them in a glass cup and pour boiling water over them. Discard the first batch of tea and pour more boiling water. Let it steep for 2-3 minutes.

Honeysuckle, Mulberry Leaf, and Chrysanthemum Tea

Honeysuckle has a good effect in clearing liver fire, and mulberry leaf and chrysanthemum also have the same effect. Drinking this tea can effectively clear liver fire and relieve hearing loss caused by excessive liver fire.

Method: Prepare 6 grams of honeysuckle and mulberry leaf, put them in a cup, and steep in boiling water for half an hour. Then add chrysanthemum and simmer for 3 minutes.

Self-Massage

Massaging the liver area can help improve blood circulation in the liver, thereby improving overall blood circulation, regulating liver fire, and improving hearing loss caused by excessive liver fire.

Method: Lie flat on your back and gently massage the gallbladder and liver area with the palms of your hands, located below the rib cage on the right side of the body. Continue massaging until you feel heat.

Hearing Loss Caused by Kidney Deficiency

According to traditional Chinese medicine, "the kidneys open up to the ears," and normal hearing relies on the nourishing function of the kidneys. If the kidneys are deficient, the nourishing ability of the kidneys is insufficient, resulting in hearing loss and other problems.

Signs of kidney deficiency include: sore and weak lower back and knees, dizziness, tinnitus, thin body, and feeling of restlessness and heat. In men, there may be nocturnal emissions and premature ejaculation, while women may experience irregular menstrual cycles.

Goji Berry Porridge

Goji berries have a good effect in replenishing Qi and nourishing the kidneys, helping to regulate hearing loss caused by kidney deficiency.

Method: Prepare 75 grams of red dates, 100 grams of rice, and an appropriate amount of goji berries and white sugar. Soak the red dates and rice in warm water for 20 minutes, then wash the rice and cook it with water and red dates. After it boils, add goji berries. Add white sugar to taste when eating.

Chestnut Porridge

Chestnuts can help tonify kidney Qi and have a good regulating effect on kidney deficiency. Drinking chestnut porridge can help alleviate hearing loss caused by kidney deficiency.

Method: Peel 12 chestnuts and cook them with 100 grams of glutinous rice to make porridge, and consume it while it is still hot.

Self-Massage

Massaging the waist area daily can help nourish the kidneys, improve kidney deficiency, and alleviate hearing loss caused by kidney deficiency.

Method: Rub the palms of both hands together until they feel warm, and then place them on both sides of the waist, with the palms against the skin. Massage the waist area up and down until you feel heat. It is recommended to do this once in the morning and once in the evening, about 200 times each time.
