To Add or Not to Add: The Water Dilemma in Juicing

October 11, 2023

Drinking fruit juice made from squeezing fruit is not only convenient and delicious, but also allows for DIY fruit juice according to one's preferences. However, many people are confused about whether or not to add water when juicing. So, do you really need to add water when juicing?

Should you add water when juicing?

Whether or not to add water when juicing mainly depends on the water content of the fruit and personal preference. If you prefer a rich taste, you can skip adding water. If you prefer a slightly lighter taste, you can decide whether or not to add water based on the water content of the fruit. For example, fruits with high water content like watermelon and tomatoes do not need to have water added, while fruits with less juice like carrots and corn can have a small amount of cold or warm water added. If you want a richer taste, you can use milk or yogurt instead of water. In addition to the question of whether or not to add water, there are a few other things to consider when juicing:

Choose fresh ingredients

If fruit is left for too long, its nutritional value will be greatly reduced. Therefore, try to choose fresh ingredients. If the ingredients have been left for too long and have started to rot, be sure to remove the rotten parts before using them.

Peel as much as possible

Fruit pulp contains abundant vitamins and minerals, but the skin of fruits and vegetables is often coated with wax or attached with preservatives and residual pesticides. For food safety, it is best to peel them before consumption.

Make and drink immediately

The longer vitamins in fruits are exposed to air, the more likely they are to oxidize. Fruit juice will also taste bad if left for too long. Therefore, it is best to drink the juice immediately after making it. To minimize vitamin loss and flavor degradation, work quickly and try to finish making the juice in the shortest time possible.

Add lemon juice last, if possible

Lemon juice has a strong acidic taste and can easily overpower the flavors of other ingredients. Therefore, it is recommended to add lemon juice to the juice after it has been made. This way, the original flavor of the juice will not be compromised, and you can also enjoy the fragrance of the lemon.

Other tips for juicing

During the hot summer weather, adding ice can make the juice more refreshing and enjoyable. When using a juicer or blender, you can put some ice in the container beforehand to reduce foam and prevent some nutrients from oxidizing. Finally, it is important to note that fruit juice should not be heated or sweetened. You can add honey or yogurt for flavoring. Also, the pulp from the juice can be consumed as it contains a large amount of dietary fiber.
