The carotid artery in the larynx is a relatively large artery, and once broken, it often bleeds out and causes ischemic shock or even death. Carotid artery blood loss is often fatal in a matter of seconds, if we can fight for this second, for the later rescue is extremely beneficial. In case of a cut throat, what should we do for first aid?
The serious danger of cut throat
The neck is one of the weakest parts of the body, but it has many important structures such as airway, esophagus, carotid artery, jugular vein, spinal cord and thyroid gland. Once injured, especially if a large blood vessel in the neck is ruptured, the situation is even more dangerous. Rupture of the carotid artery can quickly lead to hemorrhagic shock and interruption of blood supply to the brain; negative pressure in the jugular vein, the air can immediately enter the heart cavity from the wound after rupture, leaving the heart without blood to drain, often too late to rescue, and death within a few minutes.
Calm down, calm down
You must calm yourself down as soon as possible and try not to shout so as not to move the neck muscles and trachea and accelerate the blood flow in the carotid artery. And if the trachea is cut, shouting will not make a big sound, so it is better not to do useless work, save strength and improve endurance.
The first step in the first aid method is to stop the bleeding by compression.
The correct approach is for the rescuer to immediately press the upper and lower ends of the wound with both thumbs in the direction of the transverse process of the cervical vertebrae, and if it is difficult to stop the bleeding by compression with only one hand, use both hands to stop the bleeding by compression at the same time to achieve immediate hemostasis as well as to prevent air from entering the heart cavity.
The second step of the first aid method is to apply pressure and bandage
First fill the wound with gauze, then compress the wound with a bandage roll, put the upper arm on the opposite side of the casualty close to the ear, flex the forearm on the top of the head and then pressure bandage, so that the bandage roll is accurately fixed in the wound site, knotted on the outside of the upper arm on the opposite side. If necessary, use a pencil, chopsticks, etc. to tighten and fix.
First aid treatment for hemorrhagic shock
If the patient is in shock due to excessive blood loss, under the premise of ensuring compression to stop bleeding, put the patient in a flat position, or elevate both lower limbs to increase the amount of blood return, while covering the foreign body to keep warm. Quickly take the injured person to the hospital for treatment.
