Summer sun itching is what happened

September 18, 2023
Some friends start itching as soon as their skin is exposed to the sun in the summer, and may also develop a skin rash, a phenomenon that is mostly due to solar dermatitis.

What is solar dermatitis

The first thing you need to do is to get a good idea of what you're getting.

Causes of solar dermatitis

Sunlight dermatitis is an acute inflammatory reaction in the exposed area of the skin caused by excessive exposure to medium-wave ultraviolet rays from sunlight. Because of the superficial effect of medium-wave ultraviolet radiation, it only manifests itself in the epidermis of the skin. The intense exposure to sunlight quickly causes necrosis of the skin's epidermal keratinocytes and releases mediators that cause dermal vasodilation, resulting in tissue edema. Subsequently, melanocytes are exposed to intense sunlight, which accelerates the synthesis of melanin, resulting in darkening of the sunburned skin.

Clinical symptoms of solar dermatitis

It is mainly found on the face, neck, back of hands and other exposed areas, especially on the forehead and cheeks. A few patients show erythematous edema or plaques, with a sensation similar to burns, and the symptoms are significantly aggravated by sun exposure. The skin pigmentation of the affected area usually increases and can continue to recur for many years.

Complications of solar dermatitis

In addition to the above symptoms, a small number of patients with prolonged sun exposure may also experience chronic damage, such as skin thickening, keratinization, atrophy, capillary dilation, and hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation.

Prevention of solar dermatitis

For patients with solar dermatitis, it is important to participate in outdoor exercise regularly to enhance the skin's tolerance to sunlight; avoid outdoor activities or reduce the duration of activities between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. when sunlight exposure is strongest; avoid sun exposure and pay attention to protection when going out, such as holding an umbrella, wearing a wide-brimmed hat, and wearing long-sleeved clothes; if outdoors, it is recommended to routinely apply a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or more, and for those with Severe photosensitive people need to use high-efficiency shading agents with SPF 30 or above.
