UV damage to the eyes

September 9, 2023
Ultraviolet light is invisible light, although it can sterilize and disinfect, but it is easy to produce great harm to human skin and eyes. Especially the eyes for the absorption of ultraviolet light is strong, it is easy to cause the body to suffer from a variety of eye diseases.

Produce cataracts

UV rays can cause cataracts. Cataracts caused by ultraviolet radiation are a very critical point in the development of cataracts because the damage caused by the effects of ultraviolet light on the lens accumulates, causing the lens to become opaque and eventually cataracts to appear.

Causes pterygium

UV rays may cause the eye to cause pterygium. This is caused by UV light causing damage to the elastic layer in front of the cornea and causing the connective tissue under the conjunctiva to proliferate and form fibrovascular tissue to invade the center of the cornea.

Causes retinopathy

Ultraviolet light can easily cause retinal lesions. UVA, which is contained in ultraviolet rays, can penetrate deep into the eye, reaching the deeper part of the eye and causing retinal lesions. The most common is macular degeneration in the retina, which can seriously affect vision.

Causes solar conjunctivitis

UV rays can cause solar conjunctivitis in the eye. The damage to the cornea from UV light is tremendous, and strong UV light exposure can easily cause painful aggregation and vision loss in the eye, resulting in helioconjunctivitis.

Causes melanoma

UV rays can cause melanoma in the eyes. The skin around the eyes is very fragile and is the most neglected area in terms of protection. Prolonged overexposure of the skin around the eyes may lead to skin cancer of the eyelids around the eyes, such as malignant melanoma.

Causes electrophthalmia

UV rays may cause the development of electrophthalmia. When UV light arrives, the cornea and conjunctiva are acutely damaged and the epithelium is easily detached. People with photoophthalmia may initially feel a foreign body sensation in their eyes, and in severe cases, they may experience photophobia, tearing, and specific discomfort in both eyes. This kind of electrophthalmia is closely related to welding, gas welding, etc.
