What's wrong with the white spots on the nails

September 8, 2023
The nail is a window to observe the health of the body, so we should pay attention to its changes from time to time. Normally, the nail bed under the nail has a rich microvascular system, so it is pink in color, so what is the matter with white dots on the nail?

Fungal infection

The early symptoms of nail fungal infection, also known as gray nails, are white nails, often starting at the nail root, with small white dots on the surface of the nail plate, which can gradually expand and lead to a soft sunken nail plate.

Trauma to the nail

When the nails are exposed for a long time, they are easily damaged, such as when they get stuck in a doorway, or when they are crushed or bumped. This can lead to damage to the nail matrix cells at the root of the nail, resulting in white spots and, if the nail bed is damaged, lobe bleeding under the nail. But don't worry, as the nail grows upward, it will eventually be cut off.

Damage to the skin around the nail

One fifth of the nail is hidden inside the flesh, so damage to the skin around the nail directly affects the nail's nutrient intake, which can affect the condition of the nail. For example, tearing off the barbs on the skin around the nail can cause white spots to appear on the nail.

Nutrient deficiency

Although there is no clear medical explanation for the mechanism of white spots on the nails, it has been found in daily life that some people with nutrient deficiencies develop this condition. For example, white spots or mica-like nails may indicate a deficiency of trace elements such as calcium, silicon, zinc, etc. It is recommended to go to the hospital for a trace element test to determine the cause and treat accordingly.

Other causes

Too many white dots on the nail is a sign of neurasthenia; yellow dots may indicate a digestive system disease; small grains on the nail are a sign of drug poisoning or parasites in the body.
