How much blood pressure is normal in the elderly

September 6, 2023
As the saying goes, "There is an old man in the family, and there is a treasure in the family". In China, elderly people are citizens over 60 years of age. Recently, the aging of China's population is increasing and the proportion of elderly people in the population is getting higher and higher, at the same time, the health problems faced by the elderly are attracting more and more attention. Among all the health factors, blood pressure is undoubtedly the most basic and at the same time extremely important one. Do you have one or more of these "babies" in your family? Let's learn about the normal range of blood pressure for the elderly.

Normal Blood Pressure in Adults

To understand the normal range of blood pressure in the elderly, we must first understand the normal blood pressure in adults. 2004, China's Hypertension Prevention and Control Guidelines Revision Committee, based on the latest international and domestic research reports and guidelines, determined that the normal blood pressure level is: systolic blood pressure below 120 mmHg, diastolic blood pressure below 80 mmHg. -139mmHg and diastolic blood pressure 80mmHg - 89mmHg is normal high pressure.

Normal blood pressure in the elderly

Theoretically, elderly people belong to the category of adults, and the normal range of blood pressure should be the same as that of adults. However, because of the reduced elasticity of blood vessels in the elderly, blood pressure may rise slightly in comparison. However, this range should not exceed the normal high value by too much. It should be around 140/90 mmHg.

Hypertension and hypotension

The opposite of normal blood pressure is hypertension and hypotension. Hypertension is defined as a systolic blood pressure ≥ 140 mmHg and/or a diastolic blood pressure ≥ 90 mmHg on at least three non-same-day blood pressure measurements. while a blood pressure < 90/60 mmHg is called hypotension.

Abnormal blood pressure in the elderly should not be ignored

Numerous studies and surveys have confirmed that it is optimal for the elderly to maintain a blood pressure of 120/80 mmHg. Many people believe that high blood pressure is dangerous and low blood pressure is relatively safe - this is a misconception, as low blood pressure is just as dangerous as high blood pressure. According to the "Guidelines for the Treatment of Hypertension" published by the World Health Organization, age is one of the risk stratification factors for patients with diagnosed hypertension.
