What is the difference between chives and leeks

April 23, 2023
Chives and leeks are just a word away from each other and have some commonalities in taste and nutritional content. Chives are a special cultivation of green leeks. So what's the difference between leeks and chives?

Color Differences

Chives grow in the shade and do not photosynthesize, thus they have no chlorophyll and are yellow, i.e. leeks are yellow. Leeks, on the other hand, can photosynthesize, and the leek leaves are green and rich in chlorophyll.

Nutrient differences

Both leeks and chives are rich in dietary fiber and minerals. The selenium in leeks was found to be higher than that in chives, while vitamins and other minerals were lower than in leeks. Therefore a comprehensive comparison of leeks has a slightly higher nutritional value.

Taste differences

Chives are a spicy and pungent vegetable with a stronger odor, but not as soft and palatable as leeks. Chives are easier to chew and digest than leeks.

Contraindications

Chives are spicy and irritating, so you should eat them sparingly, especially if you have a hot body or are on fire, or if you have poor digestion. Chives are not as hot as leeks, so there are no special contraindications.

Price difference

Because of the special growth requirements of leeks, planting trouble, production is also less, so from time to time the price of leeks on the leek will generally be higher than leeks.
